SENANGA DISTRICT COMMEMORATES 2026 AFRICA DECENTRALISATION DAY

Senanga District joins the rest of Zambia and other African Union Member States in commemorating Africa Decentralisation and Local Development Day, observed on 10th October 2026.

This year's commemoration is being held under the theme:

πŸ’§ β€œEmpowered Local Governments for Sustainable Water and Sanitation: Advancing Resilient, Inclusive and Sustainable Territories towards Agenda 2063.”

To mark this important day, Senanga District is featuring on a radio programme on Hope FM, featuring members of the District Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Education (D-WASHE) Committee as panellists.

The programme is providing a platform to discuss the importance of decentralisation in improving access to safe water and sanitation services, promoting community participation and strengthening local development.

The discussion also highlights the importance of empowering local authorities and communities to take an active role in water governance, sanitation management and the promotion of sustainable and inclusive development.

Through this engagement, the district seeks to raise public awareness of the critical role that decentralisation plays in improving service delivery and ensuring that development responds to the needs and priorities of local communities.

As we commemorate this important day, we are reminded that sustainable development begins with empowered local governments and active community participation.

Three Councillors representing women, youth and persons with disabilities under the Proportional Representation electoral system have been sworn into office in Senanga District.

The Councillors are:

1. Tabo Wakumelo – Women Representation
2. Mwiya Memory – Youth Representation
3. Kokola Nasilele – Persons with Disabilities Representation

The swearing-in marks an important step towards strengthening inclusive representation and participation in local governance, ensuring that women, young people and persons with disabilities have representation in the affairs of the Council.

The Proportional Representation system for Councils is provided for under Section 36E of the Electoral Process (Amendment) Act No. 12 of 2026.

The three Councillors now join other members of the Council in carrying out their mandate of promoting development and representing the interests of the people of Senanga.

Western Province Permanent Secretary, Mr Simomo Akapelwa, today toured the Mwanambinyi East Market construction project in Senanga District under the Zambia Devolution Support Programme (ZDSP).

Mr Akapelwa was accompanied by Senanga District Commissioner, Ms Zitah Sipalo, and Senanga Town Council Secretary, Mr Gift Mweetwa, during the monitoring exercise aimed at assessing and appreciating the progress of works being undertaken at the market.

The team toured the project site and took note of the significant progress made so far. The monitoring exercise also provided an opportunity to appreciate the works completed and assess the overall advancement of the project towards its intended purpose of improving trading facilities and supporting local economic activities.

Once completed, the Mwanambinyi East Market is expected to accommodate at least 180 traders, providing a more organised and conducive trading environment for the local community. The project is 95 percent complete.

The project forms part of Government’s efforts to promote local development and improve public infrastructure through the Zambia Devolution Support Programme, with the facility expected to contribute to enhanced livelihoods and economic opportunities for residents of Senanga.

Senanga, 11th September, 2026 β€” Senanga District yesterday witnessed the swearing-in of newly elected civic leaders, marking the official commencement of their mandate to serve the people of Senanga.

The ceremony, held at Senanga Town Council Civic Centre, saw the newly elected Council Chairperson, Mr. Mwiya Inambao, Members of Parliament and Councillors formally ushered into office.

The civic leaders took their respective oaths of office before Resident Magistrate Phenny Phiri, pledging to uphold the Constitution and faithfully discharge their responsibilities in the interest of the people they represent.

The ceremony brought together civic leaders, traditional leaders, senior government officials, heads of government departments, members of the public and other invited guests.

The swearing-in marks an important milestone in the governance of Senanga District, as the newly elected leaders assume responsibility for representing their constituencies and wards and contributing to the development of the district.

The Council Chairperson and Councillors are expected to work closely with the Council administration, Government and other stakeholders in addressing the needs of residents and advancing development across the district.
