COUNCIL COMMENCES REHABILITATION OF 17KM MITUKUTUKU–SANDAN’GOMBE ROAD
Solwezi Municipal Council has commenced the rehabilitation of the 17-kilometre Mitukutuku–Sandan’gombe feeder road to improve connectivity and ensure reliable access for communities ahead of the rainy season.
The road, which has been in a deplorable state and nearly impassable during the rainy season, serves communities in Mitukutuku, Kamijiji and Sandan’gombe. Its rehabilitation is expected to improve mobility, support agricultural activities and enhance access to essential public services.
To expedite the works before the onset of heavy rains, the Council has divided the project into two sections, with a contractor assigned to each. The first section, covering 10 kilometres, is funded under the 2026 Constituency Development Fund (CDF) and involves full gravelling of two kilometres, heavy grading, shaping and compaction of the remaining eight kilometres, alongside the opening of side drains and installation of culverts where necessary.
The second section, covering seven kilometres from Mitukutuku towards Kamijiji, is funded through the 2026 Ward Development Fund (WDF), using locally generated revenue. Works include heavy grading, compaction and gravelling of critical sections.
The combined investment demonstrates the Council’s commitment to utilising both CDF and locally generated resources to address community needs and improve rural infrastructure.
The rehabilitation is expected to benefit small-scale farmers by reducing transportation costs, minimising delays and post-harvest losses, and improving the movement of agricultural inputs and produce, including maize, cassava and vegetables, to markets in Solwezi. It will also improve access to agro-dealers and facilitate the timely delivery of Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP) inputs.
Additionally, the improved road will enhance access to schools, health facilities and other essential services, support local trade and create employment opportunities for residents through construction activities.
Solwezi Municipal Council remains committed to rehabilitating feeder roads as a catalyst for rural development and improved service delivery. Community members are urged to protect the road infrastructure by avoiding activities that cause damage, including uncontrolled water diversion and unauthorised cutting of the road.
