This evening, I had the honour of representing the Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture at a distinguished Corporate Leadership Reception hosted by the Zimbabwe Rugby Union at Wild Geese Lodge, celebrating a moment of immense national pride - the Sables’ historic qualification for the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
For me, this achievement represents far more than a sporting milestone. It is a reflection of the resilience, discipline and determination of our athletes, coaches, administrators and the entire rugby fraternity.
I was pleased to share this important occasion with a high-level delegation from World Rugby, Rugby Africa and the Zimbabwe Rugby Union, as well as officials from the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture.
In my remarks, I emphasised that for rugby and the wider sporting fraternity to continue growing in leaps and bounds, we must sustain investment in grassroots sport. I therefore called upon the private sector to partner more closely with sport, not only as an investment in our athletes and sporting institutions, but also as a cultural affirmation of Zimbabwe’s enduring love for sport.
I congratulate the Sables on this historic qualification. As you prepare to carry our national colours onto the world stage, know that an entire nation stands firmly behind you.
