DRAKE HIGH SCHOOL BRINGS GENERATIONS TOGETHER AT 2026 SPEECH AND PRIZE-GIVING DAY
It was a memorable reunion at Drake High School as former and current generations came together for the school's 2026 Speech and Prize-Giving Day, celebrating its rich history, achievements and continued growth.
The event was graced by the school's founding head, 88-year-old Mr Manokore, who took attendees down memory lane, recounting the establishment of the school in 1966 before assuming the role of substantive head in 1976.
Former student Mr Jeph Gwatipedza was the Guest of Honour, accompanied by his sister, Ms Elizabeth Gwatipedza, a former Town Clerk of the Municipality of Redcliff.
Other notable former students in attendance included Ms Sheila Tagwirei, Personal Assistant to the current Town Clerk, and former track star Mr Patson Muderedzi. Their presence underscored the strong bond between the school's alumni and the current generation, bringing together individuals whose experiences reflect the institution's enduring legacy.
Currently under the Municipality of Redcliff, Drake High School continues to grow in both enrolment and stature. School Head Mr Mapiravana revealed that the institution has an enrolment of 1,050 learners supported by 45 teachers, reflecting its continued growth and contribution to education.
Mr Mapiravana hailed the Municipality of Redcliff for its continued support of the institution, noting that the assistance had contributed significantly to the school's sustained success and progress. He acknowledged the importance of continued investment and support in creating an environment that enables learners and educators to achieve their full potential.
Speaking on behalf of Town Clerk Mr Chakauya, Director of Housing and Community Services, Mr A. Chigayo, said the Municipality of Redcliff continues to support not only Drake High School but also other schools within its jurisdiction, recognising education as a key driver of sustainable development. These efforts align with the country's National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2) and the national Vision 2030 agenda, which seeks to transform Zimbabwe into an empowered and prosperous upper-middle-income society.
The reunion was not only an opportunity to recognise outstanding performance but also to celebrate the school's journey, honour those who laid its foundation and inspire the learners of today to build on the legacy of those who came before them.
As Drake High School continues to make strides, the occasion reaffirmed its place as an important part of the Municipality of Redcliff's educational heritage and highlighted the value of collaboration between schools, local authorities, alumni and communities in advancing education.
