PFT's Annual Report 2025-26 released!

PFT is pleased to share its Annual Report 2025-26 with its stakeholders. The Annual Report 2025-26 highlights key achievements from throughout the past financial year, aligned to our corporate goals: collaborate, communicate and promote, influence and enhance.

During the year, we installed two high-visibility shipping container signs promoting planting trees for timber and carbon, successfully launched our Carbon Forestry 101 project, signed up more than 100 members to our Tree Alliance community, represented the private forestry industry on 21 different government and industry committees and forums and provided 15 submissions to state and federal governments.

The report also showcases production from the private estate in 2025-26, with 3.85 million tonnes of logs to market, an increase of 1.04 million tonnes since 2024-25. Carbon forestry participation is also increasing, with over 43,000 hectares of private freehold land registered for vegetation-based carbon projects in Tasmania under the Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) scheme.

You can read more about our deliverables and progress in the Annual Report 2025-26 on our website: https://pft.tas.gov.au/annual-reports

To achieve the best establishment outcomes for your forest, it is important to select tree species that are well suited to your site conditions. In addition to choosing the right species from PFTs Tree Species List, factors such as climate and soil type should align with the requirements of the trees you intend to plant. Site selection should also take into account the potential benefits of shelter for livestock and crops, as well as opportunities to utilise less productive areas of the farm, including steep, rocky, or sloping land.

There are many planting configurations available to suit different farming objectives. Depending on your goals and the space available, options may include block plantings, woodlots, shelterbelts, or riparian plantings. Careful consideration of your objectives will help determine the most suitable approach for your property.

To support landholders through the planning process, Private Forests Tasmaniaโ€™s Knowledge Hub includes a dedicated Species, Sites and Planning section. This resource provides information to help match tree species with their ideal growing conditions while ensuring alignment with your farm management objectives and operational requirements.

Malcolm Larner, owner of Semaphore Farm at Port Arthur, has spent more than 20 years managing native regrowth forests and plantations, continuing a family tradition of sustainable forestry. He is currently overseeing the sectional harvesting and reforestation of a 22-hectare native forest coupe, while carefully managing biodiversity and environmental values.

A member of Private Forests Tasmaniaโ€™s Tree Alliance, a community of Tasmanian farmers and landowners supporting trees on farms, Malcolm is passionate about sharing the benefits of forestry. He regularly welcomes schools and community groups to Semaphore Farm and has long supported forestry education across Tasmania.

The Forest Practices for Supervisors Course continues to play an important role in building capability across Tasmania's forestry sector and supporting the delivery of safe, sustainable and well-managed forest operations.

Private Forests Tasmania Operations Manager Jarrod has continued to support the Forest Practices Authority's Forest Practices for Supervisors Course through delivery of the Native Forest Silviculture module. The module was presented by PFT Operations Manager Jarrod Burn in mid-September, providing participants with an overview of the principles and practices used to sustainably manage Tasmania's native forests.

The session formed part of the Forest Practices Authority's Forest Practices for Supervisors Course, which supports the development of forestry professionals responsible for supervising operations across the state of Tasmania.

The session explored the role of silviculture in achieving a range of forest management objectives, including timber production, forest health, biodiversity conservation, and other ecosystem services.

As Tasmania moves towards the 2026-27 fire season, preparation and cooperation remain critical to protecting communities, forest assets and the wider landscape.

The latest outlooks suggest parts of Tasmania may face elevated bushfire risk this season. The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting above average temperatures across much of Australia, while the national seasonal bushfire outlook identifies north-eastern Tasmania as an area of increased fire risk due to dry conditions and below average rainfall. These forecasts reinforce the importance of early planning and preparedness across all land tenures.

The forest industry continues to play an important role in Tasmania's fire management network. Through the Tasmanian Forest Industry Fire Management Committee (FIFMC), private forest growers, forest managers, contractors and Sustainable Timber Tasmania work together to support best-practice fire prevention, preparedness and response across the state's forest estate.

As preparations for the coming season ramp up, now is a timely opportunity for forest owners, managers and contractors to review their operations and ensure they are meeting the expectations set out in these guidelines. Particular attention should be given to:

โ€ข Firefighting equipment requirements and maintenance
โ€ข Water supply availability and accessibility
โ€ข Staff and contractor fire training requirements
โ€ข Fire weather monitoring and operational restrictions
โ€ข Communications and emergency response arrangements
โ€ข Site access and emergency vehicle access points

Private Forests Tasmania's Carbon Forestry 101 regional events have concluded, with the first event being held in early August at Longford, Brighton in late August and the Ulverstone event in early September.

Across the three events, more than 50 people attended to hear from PFT about carbon forestry science, methodologies, governance, markets and sustainability. Event attendees also had the opportunity to work through some hypothetical scenarios and ask questions.

It was positive to hear anecdotal feedback from event attendees that the content was informative and easy to follow. Many attendees indicated that the content was pitched at the right level and not to complicated or oversimplified.

PFT asked event attendees to fill in a feedback form to support the projects evolvement into the future, and the form indicated that 85% of attendees felt more informed about carbon forestry post the event. When asked what they would like to see more of in the future, 50% said markets and economics, and 47% said carbon forestry methodologies.

Carbon Forestry 101 continues to evolve, and PFT is currently working on the next phase of the project to roll out to stakeholders. To stay up to date with the project and make sure you don't miss out on upcoming information, resources and events, register your interest in the project on the PFT website.

The process of selling your timber can involve a number of methods, the most common action for forest owners in Tasmania is by negotiating simultaneously with a number of potential buyers either directly, or via a broker/advisor, to arrive at the best price for the seller.

Your wood can be sold as standing or felled timber.

In general, timber processors value logs that have uniform characteristics. The amount paid to the forest owner is known as the stumpage. Stumpage excludes the costs for planning, harvesting and carting the forest products to a processing plant.

Choosing a tree species for your plantation is about finding a match between a tree and its ideal conditions. It should also align with your goals and farming operations.

If your main goal is to grow trees for wood production, a commercial species is right for you. If you want to grow trees for environmental outcomes, a conservation species is likely to be more suitable. Plantations can include a mixture of species to maximise the benefits for you and your farm.

Taking the time to understand the needs of your desired tree species and pairing it with your specific site and conditions is an important step in establishing a successful plantation and biodiversity benefits.

PFTs Knowledge Hub provides a useful tool, the Tree Species List to help you get started. Search by soil type, vegetation type, uses and region, or browse the list of suitable species within your local council region to help get started on your tree growing journey.
