Cradle Coast NRM This page is about the Cradle Coast Authority's Natural Resource Management work. Cradle Coast Authority is one of 56 Regional NRM Bodies in Australia.

Protecting and enhancing our region's natural resources and supporting sustainable agriculture. Under the Tasmanian NRM Framework and Act 2002, the State Government facilitated the establishment of Regional NRM Committees (Bodies) for each of the three regions of the State. In the Cradle Coast region the Regional Committee is part of Cradle Coast Authority. The Committee is responsible for identifying regional NRM priorities, preparing strategies and promoting NRM principles. Home to over 100,000 people living across an area of 22,250 square kilometres, the Cradle Coast region is renowned for its unique and diverse environment, pristine wilderness, rugged mountains, extensive forests, untouched coastlines, old mining towns and productive agricultural landscapes (not to mention the cleanest air in the world). The region contains nationally and globally significant natural and cultural heritage areas including the iconic Cradle Mountain, Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, the Arthur Pieman Conservation Area, the Tarkine, Narawntapu National Park and Lavinia Nature Reserve. The region has a rich diversity of landscapes of which over 50% is public land in reserves.

What are we making room for when we remove w**ds?

For Carmen, tackling asparagus fern is about conserving King Island’s bush and protecting the wildlife that depends on it.

Reducing the w**d’s dense growth gives native vegetation room to recover and helps protect habitat for the critically endangered King Island Scrubtit and King Island Brown Thornbill.

Every carefully cleared patch contributes to the bigger picture: healthier bush and a future for these birds, found nowhere else in the world.

Over the weekend, Cradle Coast NRM Regional W**ds Coordinator Petra Wilden together with Russell Horton from Wilmot Willow Busters hosted a willow treatment workshop at Gunns Plains, supporting local volunteers to protect the Leven River catchment from invasive willows.

Participants learned practical treatment methods, including stem injection, hand-pulling and cut-and-paste techniques, while continuing efforts to manage willows along Lowana Creek. Treating invasive willows helps protect the catchment’s native plants and animals, while allowing other vegetation to establish along creek banks.

Want to get involved? The next working bee is Saturday 14 November, 9.30 am to noon, meeting at Marshalls Bridge, Gunns Plains.

The workshop was supported by the Willow Busters Landcare Group, Cradle Coast NRM and Central Coast Council through the Cradle Coast Priority W**ds Project, supported by the Tasmanian Government.

Protecting what is already there!

W**ding is also about caring for the plants we want to keep.

As Carmen works through areas affected by asparagus fern, she identifies and protects native plants, using protective netting where needed.

These plants are an important part of the habitat already supporting King Island’s wildlife.

Taking care around them helps ensure that removing w**ds also gives native vegetation the opportunity to survive and grow.

Recently Tom attended the National Sustainable Agriculture Facilitator conference bringing together other regional Sustainable Agriculture Facilitator's from around Australia.

The event provided an opportunity to share knowledge, discuss practical approaches to improving farm productivity and resilience, and explore emerging opportunities in areas such as carbon farming, environmental markets and emissions reduction.

These conversations help strengthen connections across the sector and support our ongoing work with farmers and landholders across the Cradle Coast region to improve soil health and encourage sustainable land management practices.

The picture features, Regional Soil Coordinator Belinda Neilson and Tasmanian SAF's Adeel Afzal, Tim Ackroyd, Tom O'Malley and Jacinta Leys.

This project is supported by the Australian Government through funding from the Natural Heritage Trust under the Climate-Smart Agriculture Program and delivered by Cradle Coast NRM, a member of the Commonwealth Regional Delivery Partners panel.

What’s happening underground?

There’s more to asparagus fern than what you see above ground.

Beneath the soil, the plant develops roots with water-storing tubers. Removing the leafy growth alone won’t deal with the whole plant.

In this instalment of our W**d Wednesday mini-series, Carmen shows how she finds the base of the plant and carefully works beneath it to remove the crown and root system.

It’s patient, hands-on work that helps tackle the w**d where it starts.
