Northern and Yorke Landscape Board Caring for land, water and nature that sustain our communities and industries in South Australia's Northern and Yorke region.

Managing our landscapes is about working together to ensure that the needs of the community, industries and the environment are balanced in a way that is sustainable. The Northern and Yorke Landscape Board is one of eight landscape boards across South Australia that work alongside community members and stakeholders to sustainably manage our natural resources, with a focus on soil, water, pest plants and animals, and biodiversity. The Northern and Yorke region extends for 38,500 square kilometres. It is a varied and productive portion of South Australia and includes approximately 1300km of coastline and adjacent marine areas. The region encompasses the Yorke Peninsula, significant areas of Spencer Gulf and Gulf St Vincent, the southern Flinders Ranges, parts of the Rangelands, the Mid North, the northern Mount Lofty Ranges, the Barossa and northern Adelaide Plains. It supports a population of approximately 150,000 people who reside in agricultural, coastal and urban communities. It also welcomes a large number of visitors each year to destinations that include Dhilba Guuranda-Innes National Park, the Barossa Valley, the Clare Valley and the Southern Flinders Ranges. The region includes traditional Aboriginal lands of the Kaurna, Narrunga, Ngadjuri, Nukunu, Kaurna and Peramangk people. The major urban centres are Port Pirie, Gawler, Nuriootpa, Clare, Burra, Peterborough, Kadina, Moonta and Wallaroo. Natural resources underpin a range of industries. Approximately 80% of the region is under agricultural cropping and grazing production contributing a quarter of South Australia's agricultural earnings. The region embraces the major Barossa Valley and Clare Valley w**e growing regions, and supports significant mining and mineral processing activities, fishing, aquaculture, forestry, horticulture and tourism.

When crop growth starts thinning out and bare soil takes over, you might need to look below the surface.

Come with Sustainable Agriculture Officer Bri as we check in on one of our local trial sites looking at dry saline soils. In hot, dry conditions, naturally high salt levels in the subsoil can move closer to the surface, making it harder for plants to establish and groundcover to hang on.

That’s exactly what the NGN Managing and Mitigating Dry Saline Soils (Magnesia Patches) in South Australia project is working to overcome.

Funded by Grains Research and Development Corporation and led by AIR EP - Ag Innovation & Research Eyre Peninsula, the project is testing practical management options at sites including Pinery and Point Pass to see what works across different parts of the region.

Seeing something similar on your place? Get in touch with our team.

We’re heading to Heggies Vineyard for an afternoon learning more about the freshwater turtles living in our region, and we’d love you to join us 🐢

With nesting season just getting underway, it’s a great chance to learn what to look out for and how you can help. We’ll also check in on the floating nesting island installed earlier this year, designed to give turtles a safer place to lay their eggs away from foxes.

You’ll also get a closer look at what turtle nests and hatchlings can look like, and how sightings recorded through TurtleSAT can contribute to the bigger picture of turtle conservation across the region.

Meet Dylan. He’s one part of the predator control team behind Marna Banggara.

We caught up with him during the spring yalgi monitoring on southern Guuranda, Yorke Peninsula, and got a better look at how predator control supports the project’s rewilding efforts.

Managing fox and feral cat pressure across such a large landscape takes a mix of approaches. The predator management fence, AI-assisted cellular cameras and wireless trap technology all help the team understand what’s happening on the ground and respond more effectively. Dylan talks us through the Felixer and where it fits into this broader system.

Lower predator numbers give native species a better chance to return and stay, while also creating the conditions for future reintroductions across the region.

The team has a call out to the local community. If you spot a fox or feral cat, log it in FeralScan and help them build a clearer picture of where predators are moving.

Marna Banggara is jointly funded by the Australian Government Natural Heritage Trust and the Northern and Yorke Landscape Board, a member of the Commonwealth Regional Delivery Partners panel.

What does your garden have to do with the dunes at North Beach? Potentially quite a lot. 🌱

More than 65 introduced plant species have made their way into the dune system at Wallaroo’s North Beach, including familiar garden plants that have escaped beyond the backyard.

Now locals, volunteers and project partners are pushing them back and giving native coastal plants room to reclaim the dunes.

They’ve removed invasive species across the site and planted hundreds of local natives, while residents are also learning how the plants they choose at home can make a difference along the coast.

See why tackling garden escapees at North Beach starts well beyond the dunes 👇
