Internal Reserves in Colonel Light Gardens.
This is what is supposed to happen.
Why? Charles Reade was very enthusiastic about safe places for children to play together, that was separated from traffic. These spaces provided a larger shared space that could provide what the smaller back yards in homes for people of smaller income, could provide. The Sales brochure showed a yellow path down the centre of each. There are 8 of these reserves still in existence in CLG. Four are behind houses on Tidworth on the east and west sides of Flinders Avenue. The ones that are still open - are not subject to all the scary things that the residents who have enclosed theirs are scared of. If the spaces were supposed to be fenced off backyards - that's what Charles Reade's maps would have shown but they don't. He wanted a larger communal space.
