📣 BIG NEWS FOR OUR COMMUNITY—WE CAN FINALLY SHARE! 🧡

We’ve received funding to grow our Winhangarra Outreach Service!

🌿 Bigger space. More staff. More support for our community.

Since last year, we’ve been working on a smaller scale, helping people access practical support and responding to the needs coming through our doors. Now we’re recruiting staff and expanding what we can offer—with a bigger, purpose-built building expected in March 2027!

The new space will include accessible showers, washing machines and dryers, private case management spaces and a welcoming community area.

But you don’t have to wait—we’re here now!

🚿 Sleeping rough or without access to facilities? Come in for a shower and to wash and dry your clothes.
🏠 Need help with housing, homelessness or tenancy issues? Let’s work through it together.
🤝 Finding aged care, disability or other services difficult to navigate? We can help you connect.
💬 Not sure where to start? Come in for a yarn.

Everyone is welcome. No judgement.

What an incredible week on Larrakia Country.

Our leadership team proudly represented Bunmabunmarra Services and our Dubbo and Central West communities at the Australian Homelessness Conference 2026 in Darwin.

It was an honour to share the work of Gibir House, connect with people from across Australia and internationally, and learn from others working to address homelessness in their communities.

There is so much to reflect on—from the young people sharing their lived experience to the longstanding work of Aboriginal community-controlled organisation Noongar Mia Mia. I also appreciated the empathy and care shown by Josh Burns, Special Envoy for Social Housing and Homelessness.

Alongside these conversations was the confronting reality of the closure of Darwin’s YiSSA short-stay accommodation. Plans to relocate residents to Batchelor, around 100 kilometres away, raise serious concerns about access to services, continuity of care and connection to community.

For me, the week reinforced the need for strong relationships, shared accountability and government departments working together. Whether we are government-funded or independently resourced, we need to work towards common goals, with Aboriginal people, Aboriginal community-controlled organisations and people with lived experience helping shape the decisions that affect them.

I spoke about the ongoing dispossession and displacement of our people. I also raised “black cladding”—where organisations present themselves as Aboriginal-led or community-controlled without genuine Aboriginal ownership, authority and accountability.

It is an uncomfortable conversation, but one we need to have openly. It affects trust, where resources go, the work of genuine ACCOs and, most importantly, our mobs.

As an Aboriginal community-controlled organisation, our work is grounded in culture, dignity and self-determination. We support people from all backgrounds who are experiencing homelessness, and bring that same care and commitment to everyone who comes through our organisation.

As last week closes and a new week begins, we bring these conversations and connections home with us. This Thursday, we will be launching our new service—another step in responding to the needs of our community and strengthening the support available.

We return home proud of what we shared, grateful for the connections we made and determined to keep turning advocacy into action.
