Bitou bush is a sprawling shrub that can climb over other plants. The leathery leaves are up to 7 cm long and 5 cm wide. Ripe fruit are purplish black, egg shaped and up to 8 mm long.
Bitou bush outcompetes native plants, reducing food and shelter for native animals. It spreads easily forming dense thickets that limit movement of people and animals.
The NSW government reminds the community that bitou bush must not be imported into the state, sold, bartered, exchanged or offered for sale.
