Our aim is to provide and promote equitable opportunity for meeting the informational needs of the people of the City of Kalamunda in a friendly and helpful environment. OUR STORY
The City of Kalamunda Library Service has provided more than 62 years of continuous library service. It has been a vital part of the community since it began in 1958, and its history illustrates how it has responded to the needs of local people. On 3 October 1958 the district's first public library opened in a small transportable building at Recreation Reserve (now Kostera Oval). This consisted of two timber and fibro huts which were purchased from Allawah Grove a former migrant hostel in Guildford, to be used as temporary premises for a library.

โ€ข 1963 - New Public Library at Kalamunda opened on Railway Road.
โ€ข 1977 - โ€˜Friends of the Libraryโ€™ and housebound delivery service established.
โ€ข 1978 - Mobile Library service established.
โ€ข 1980 - Forrestfield Library officially opened.
โ€ข 1982 - Lesmurdie Community Library opened, first joint-use library to be built in WA.
โ€ข 1984 - Local History Collection established.
โ€ข 1987 - Major extensions to the Kalamunda Library.
โ€ข 1988 - High Wycombe Library officially opened.
โ€ข 1988 - Stained glass window completed and handed over to the Shire of Kalamunda.
โ€ข 1991 - Automation arrived and the card catalogue departed.
โ€ข 1997 - High Wycombe Library extended.
โ€ข 2009 - Catalogue went online.
โ€ข 2015 - page launched.
โ€ข 2017 - Kalamunda Library refurbished with Self-Check technology.
โ€ข 2018 - Celebrated the 60th Anniversary of Library Services.
โ€ข 2020 โ€“ Implementation of New Library Management System & Online Catalogue
โ€ข 2021 - Here we are today! We now have a fabulous eLibrary too and continue to host many and varied events & programmes catering for all community members.

Families and community organisations came together at the Childrenโ€™s Week Festival at Magnolia Reserve, Forrestfield on Wednesday 28 October for a vibrant day of music, play, learning and connection. Organised by the City's Place team, the event celebrated children and families through a range of engaging experiences.

Kalamunda Library Services joined in with a lively Storytime session featuring stories, rhymes, songs and bubbles, along with a fishing game, animal toys and colouring activities. Staff also enjoyed connecting with families, sharing information about Rhymetime & Storytime programs, and distributing Better Beginnings literacy boxes. ๐Ÿ“šโœจ

Canning Mills School opened in 1891, to serve the families working for the Canning Jarrah Timber Company who were producing railway sleepers for the goldfields during the gold boom of the 1890s. During the millโ€™s years of operation, a small community with various services sprung up around it, but most of this disappeared when the mill ceased operation in 1905. The school and the inn, however, continued to operate, with the school moving into a disused church building.

This building was one single room with tall narrow โ€œgothicโ€ windows, heated by a pot belly stove. It had no definite playground, so the children played anywhere in the nearby vicinity โ€“ but it was hard to find a level patch as the land sloped down to the railway line and the creek. During the time the mill was in operation the school had up to 50 children of mixed ages at a time, but by the 1920s this had dropped to just 22. In 1930 the school closed due to falling numbers.
