Big Rivers students take flight at RAAF Base Tindal! ✈️

Students from across the Big Rivers region enjoyed an exciting behind-the-scenes look at life in Defence last week, with two industry tours at RAAF Base Tindal.

Students from Mataranka, Borroloola and K-FLEX visited on Thursday, followed by students from Katherine High School and Kintore Street School on Friday.

From getting up close to the F-35A Lightning II jets and watching security dogs in action, to trying out fire hoses and enjoying lunch in the Mess, there were plenty of exciting highlights!

A huge thank you to the Defence Work Experience Team, Warrant Officer Mal Richter, RAAF reservists Ange and Buzz, and the wider Tindal team for making these visits possible. The tours gave our students a valuable insight into the diverse career pathways and opportunities available in Defence.

We hope this is the first of many opportunities to connect Big Rivers students with local industries, inspire new possibilities and help them explore where their future careers could take them! 🚀

Katherine High School is proud to recognise Kyan Brock, a Year 10 student, who recently completed an exciting and valuable work placement with New Future IT in Katherine as part of his Workplace Practices subject under the guidance of his teacher, Mr William Ndwandwe.

During his placement, Kyan gained hands-on experience in the information technology industry, working alongside experienced technicians and participating in a range of real-world tasks. These included setting up laptops, troubleshooting and servicing printers, installing Windows 11, configuring wireless access points, setting up devices for schools and community organisations, and learning how to construct and repair Ethernet cables.

Kyan also had the opportunity to visit workplaces and community facilities across the region, including Pine Creek, where he assisted with technology support and helped set up devices for students. These experiences provided valuable insight into the practical skills, teamwork, problem-solving and customer service required in the IT industry.

In his own reflection, Kyan described the experience as a wonderful opportunity to learn new skills and explore his future career pathway. He expressed gratitude to the New Future IT team, particularly Zeke and Tristian, for their guidance and support throughout the week.

👏 Congratulations, Kyan! Your willingness to learn, enthusiasm and engagement throughout your placement are a great example of how workplace learning can help students build confidence, develop practical skills and explore future career opportunities.

A big thank you to New Future IT for welcoming Kyan and providing him with this valuable industry experience, and to Mr William Ndwandwe for supporting students through the Workplace Practices subject.

🎱 LEBRON’S WORLD CLASS 🌏
Katherine High School’s Lebron Castagna has announced himself on the international eightball stage, finishing an outstanding 16th in the world at his first World Championships.
The Year 11 student travelled to Marrakech, Morocco, as part of the Australian team, taking on the world’s best junior players in the Under-18 boys competition.
Lebron exceeded his own expectations, fighting his way through to the round of 16 before bowing out 6-4 – and finishing as the last Australian standing in the Under-18 boys draw.
The 17-year-old was also the only Indigenous player in the Australian team.
“I thought I was just going to make the first round and lose the second,” Lebron said.
“But for me to keep going in my first year at Worlds, it was pretty good.”
Lebron thanked the Katherine community and everyone who helped make the trip possible, saying he was grateful for the opportunity to represent Australia.
With one year remaining in the junior ranks, he now has his sights set on the national championships in Melbourne in January – and hopefully another shot at the world stage.
