Good news for the ocean! Releasing helium balloons in NSW is now banned. 🙌🎈

The NSW Government has passed new reforms to reduce plastic pollution, and the balloon release ban is one of them.

Released balloons can end up far out at sea and when they burst, the shredded pieces can look a lot like jellyfish, and turtles, seabirds and other marine animals mistake them for food. Their ribbons and strings can also tangle marine life.

Other measures in the reforms include:

Soy sauce fish containers must be recyclable by 2030
Fruit and vegetable stickers must be compostable by 2030
Takeaway coffee cups must be recyclable from 2028

We welcome these steps, which will help reduce the amount of plastic entering our waterways and threatening marine life. But plastic pollution doesn’t stop at state borders. We urge governments to go further, and that means a strong Global Plastics Treaty.

Congratulations and thank you to everyone who has campaigned for this cause for so long! 💪🙌💙

They will be helping cater for the rescue team on that location and have launched a gofundme campaign as well. Please support their efforts and encourage these altruistic young people.

Expired flare collection - 21st of November at Dyarubbin boat ramp. 10.30am to 12 noon.

Marine flares typically have a shelf life of three years and must be replaced before their expiry date. As flares contain explosive material, their disposal is subject to strict safety and legal requirements.

Marine flares are classified as Class 1.4G explosives under the UN system adopted by SafeWork NSW. Once expired, they are considered unauthorised explosives.

A beautiful day patrolling the River. 2nd Port Watch attended the fabulous Brooklyn Community Association Community Showcase where local volunteers were celebrated. Then they refuelled both boats (ouch) and took a promising new recruit for a tour of some of the important localities.
As you can see our trusty Suzuki outboards are still going strong but they do need to be replaced soon. If you'd like to help us out with that and/or our fuel bill the link is here: https://shorturl.at/zgYQL every little bit helps and all donations are tax deductible.
Thanks to Bruce and Paul for all the great video.
