Celebrating Achievement at SES Canada Bay!
A huge congratulations to Andre and Jason, who have officially qualified as Team Leaders and earned the rank of Leading Senior Operators!
This is no small milestone - it reflects countless hours of training, dedication, leadership, and service to our community. These two consistently show up, step up, and bring their best to every task, whether it’s storm response, or supporting our unit and fellow volunteers behind the scenes. And they are both great members of our unit who are fantastic to work with.
Pictured here with Unit Commander Joe Vurchio, who proudly acknowledged their appointments at a recent Unit Meeting. Safe to say, the smiles were well earned.
We’re incredibly proud of you both. The community is safer because of volunteers like you, and the Canada Bay Unit is stronger thanks to your commitment and teamwork.
Well done, Andre and Jason

Whist the NSW SES is known for its high-profile support for our communities at times of need, there are times that our support is less visible.
One such case was the participation of the Canada Bay Unit of the SES in Operation Tabella.
This operation was a combined effort led by the NSW Police Force's to reduce crime in the Inner West
The operation was led by the Burwood Police Area Command, with support from Burwood Council, Canada Bay SES and Canterbury SES and was run at Burwood Westfield’s car park on 29/9/2026,.
The team of five Canada Bay SES Volunteers and four Canterbury SES Volunteers joined Burwood police in fitting tamper-proof screws to the number plates of 80 motor vehicles in one morning.
As the Police explained, number plate substitution is often used for toll evasion and petrol theft, as well as in the commission of other crimes, and so the free service being offered was a cheap and practical solution to reduce crime in Sydney’s Inner West.
To express their gratitude Burwood Police presented a Certificate of Appreciation to the SES Volunteers.

🟠 Ever wondered what the SES actually does? Come see for yourself! 🟠

Saturday 12th September, the SES Canada Bay Unit joins other Inner West SES Units for the Mid‑Year Cluster Exercise — a full day of practical, hands‑on practice and training.

Between 8:30 am and 2:30 pm, our volunteers will work through four realistic training stations, practising the skills they rely on during storms, floods and emergency callouts. This exercise takes place in the Blackmore Oval precinct (Canal Road, Leichhardt), right off the Bay Run.

If you’re passing by, stop for a moment and watch your local SES in action. It’s the perfect chance to see how we train, prepare and stay ready to help the community.

On Sunday representatives of the SES Canada Bay unit proudly supported the 2026 Ferragosto festival street fair in Five Dock.

We had a large contingent providing support all over the festival - engaging with the community to explain what we do, show kids our vehicles and our flashing lights and helping stall holders bump in and out.

Whilst the weather looked unsettled in the morning the day turned out to be beautiful and an estimated crowd of 100,000 enjoyed the stalls, fantastic food and entertainment across various stages.

This may have been the most successful Ferragosto ever!

Congratulations to the City of Canada Bay and all the stall holders on a great day.

Whilst the local temperature was a chilly 6 degrees on Sunday morning some members of local SES units attended flood rescue training to hone their skills.

The blue skies and cheery smiles combined for a fantastic day of learning and having some fun at the same time.

As they say, practice makes perfect.
