How good would it be to wander through old Japan with Mt Fuji in the background? 🗻✨
⠀
On the shores of Lake Saiko in Yamanashi Prefecture, Saiko Iyashi no Sato Nemba is a restored village of around 20 traditional thatched-roof houses, sitting right at the foot of Mt Fuji. Slip into a yukata, wander between the houses and try your hand at traditional craft making, all while taking in views of one of Japan’s most iconic landmarks. 🏡

Each season brings a completely different look to the village, so there's always a reason to come back. 🍁

Check it out next time you plan a trip around the Fuji Five Lakes. ✨

A 300-metre tunnel of gold, waiting to be explored. 💛🍂

Each autumn from late October to late November, the ginkgo avenues at Showa Kinen Park in Tokyo turn into glowing canopies of yellow, with fallen leaves carpeting the ground beneath your feet. Come evening during the park's Autumn Night Walk event, the trees light up and the whole avenue takes on a completely different glow. ✨🌙

Have we convinced you to come to Japan during autumn yet? 🍁

Think you've seen all Japan has to offer? 💙🌊

Tomonoura in Hiroshima Prefecture is a historic port town on the Seto Inland Sea, known as the "port of waiting tides" – where merchant ships once docked for days waiting for the currents to turn in their favour. Wander the waterfront past traditional wooden townhouses, narrow stone-paved lanes and the Joyato Lighthouse, a harbour symbol that's been guiding ships since 1859. ⚓✨

The town is said to have inspired the seaside setting of Studio Ghibli's Ponyo and you can really see why with every second you stay here. 🎬

Just 30 minutes by bus from Fukuyama Station, Tomonoura makes for an easy day trip from Hiroshima or a worthwhile stop on a journey through the region. 🚌

Business proposition: wake up early, and you experience a view like this. ☁️✨

Sitting on the border of Shiga and Fukui Prefectures, Onyu Pass is known for its autumn colours and, when the right conditions are met, breathtaking views above a sea of clouds.
As the light shifts, the landscape transforms from soft morning mist to vivid reds and golds, a scene that makes the early wake-up call completely worth it. 🍁

Peak autumn colours arrive from mid to late October, so now's a good time to start planning. 🗓️

Nothing quite compares to a folk song echoing between autumn-coloured cliffs. 🍁🚣

At Geibikei Gorge in Ichinoseki, Iwate, flat-bottomed wooden boats glide slowly along the Satetsu River between towering 100-metre limestone cliffs. The 90-minute return trip takes you through some of Tohoku's most striking scenery, and on the way back, your boatman breaks into "Geibi Oiwake", a traditional folk song that carries through the gorge in a way that's hard to put into words. 🎶

Mid-October to early November brings autumn colour to the cliffs, making it one of the most popular times to visit. At the turnaround point, try your luck tossing an undama lucky stone into a hole in the cliff. 🍀

Would you add this to your Tohoku itinerary? 🛶

Hidden in the mountains of Fukushima is where your rural Japan era begins. 🍁🚃

The Tadami Line winds through the mountains of Oku-Aizu along the Tadami River, crossing a series of arch bridges that have drawn photographers from around the world. The No.1 Tadami River Bridge Viewpoint in Mishima is the pick of the lot in October, when the surrounding mountains turn red and gold and the river reflects the whole scene back at you. 🌿

The bridge itself dates back to 1938 and is painted a soft purple, the colour of the paulownia flower, a local specialty of Mishima. A 20-minute uphill walk from the roadside gets you there. Worth every step. 🚶

Worth seeing for yourself? 🌉

A castle, a moat and 400 years of history. 🏯💧

Originally built in the late 16th century, Hiroshima Castle rises above a wide moat with its elegant five-storey reflected on the water. Walk along the surrounding paths and you'll be greeted by weathered stone walls, tree-filled grounds and a new perspective around every corner. 🌿

While you're there, pop into nearby Hiroshima Gokoku Shrine just a short stroll away – a quietly lovely spot to round out the visit.

Be sure to set aside some time on your next Hiroshima visit. 🏯

Set in Fukushima Prefecture, this feel-good movie shines a light on a region known for its rich culture, deep history and immersive travel experiences. 🧳

Synopsis
The year is 1965, and Iwaki City in Fukushima Prefecture is on the brink of industrial decline and soaring unemployment as Japan shifts from domestic coal to imported oil. In an effort to save the community, the local mining company launches an ambitious plan to build a lavish Hawaiian resort, complete with hot springs and hula girl dancers. Madoka Hirayama (Yasuko Matsuyuki), a strict dance instructor from Tokyo, is tasked with training the troupe, and quickly learns that shaping a group of small-town girls into polished hula performers is no easy feat. Directed by LEE Sang-il (Kokuho), this 4K remastered edition of the 2006 classic brings renewed vibrancy to the beloved original.
A thriving destination rich in tradition and surrounded by stunning natural beauty, Fukushima Prefecture embodies everything Japan is famous for. Explore a preserved Edo-period town, admire majestic castles framed by vibrant autumn leaves and immerse yourself in samurai heritage that defines the region.

The onsen town straight out of a movie. ♨️🌿

Tucked into the mountains of Gunma Prefecture about two hours from Tokyo, Shima Onsen is a traditional hot spring village that has been drawing visitors since the 10th century. With 42 natural springs feeding the town's ryokan and public baths, the water here is so pure that it’s even safe to drink. 💧

Quiet streets, the sound of the river and a long soak waiting at the end of the day. The kind of slow travel you know Japan would never disappoint you with. 🌸

Would you swap a night in the city for this? 🏞️
