A beautiful inland taipan ( oxyuranus microlepidotus) from a week or so ago.
I just came back from South Australia and the inland taipan was one of the reptiles we were looking for. At the right conditions,at the right time of the year and at the right place these snakes can be surprisingly reliable to find!
Inland taipans are so interesting and go way beyond the title of most venomous snake on earth. Don’t get me wrong being number one is impressive but where they live and how secretive they are is quite incredible. These snakes can spend MONTHS underground in the soil cracks of the moon plains and will only come up for short periods of time. As far as we know they will feed predominantly on long haired rats which are abundant at the moment after so much rain! Always a great sight and I don’t think I will ever get sick of them! If you have any questions about them feel free to ask and I’d love to know if you’ve ever seen one in the wild!
