It’s called the National Quality Standard (NQS) rating, and it can be a really useful place to start when you’re weighing up your options.

Early learning services across Australia are assessed against seven Quality Areas that look at the things that matter to children and families, from learning and relationships to health, safety, staffing and leadership.

So, what should you look for?

✅ Meeting NQS means a centre is providing quality education and care across all seven Quality Areas.
🌟 Exceeding NQS means a centre is going beyond the National Quality Standard across multiple areas.

Think of the NQS rating as one useful piece of the puzzle. Pair it with a centre tour, meeting the educators and getting a feel for whether the centre is the right fit for your family.

What do children really need to flourish?

As parents, we hear all the time that the early years matter. But when you’re choosing an early learning centre, what should you actually be looking for? What does high-quality early learning really look and feel like?

We asked Goodstart Chief Children’s Officer and early learning expert Professor Cathrine Neilsen-Hewett to break down what the evidence tells us makes the biggest difference for children.

We at Goodstart Bondi West are deeply concerned about the NSW Government’s decision to cut funding to long day care centres like ours in 2027.

We use this funding every day to provide high-quality preschool education and care, helping children get the best possible start before school.

We don’t think your 3 and 4-year-old children should receive LESS simply because they attend preschool in long day care centres like ours.

This isn’t just about Goodstart – did you know that 3 in 4 children in NSW access preschool through long day care? That means tens of thousands of working families who rely on the flexibility of longer care hours could be affected.

We need your help to advocate for you, your children, and the NSW early childhood sector.

Last week, we were delighted to welcome the Assistant Principal Early Stage 1, from Waverley Public School to Goodstart Bondi for a Transition to Primary School information session with families whose children will be starting Kindergarten in 2027.

The session provided families with valuable insights into the transition to school process, including ways to support children's independence, school readiness, and confidence as they prepare for this important milestone. Families also had the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about what to expect as their children begin their primary school journey.

We would like to thank the team at Waverley Public School for their ongoing partnership and support in helping our children and families prepare for a successful transition to school.

Our team enjoyed a lovely morning tea, thoughtful gifts, and heartfelt thank you messages from our families. It was wonderful to take a moment to recognise the passion, dedication, and care that our educators bring to their roles every day.

We are so grateful for the positive impact our educators have on the lives of children, helping them learn, grow, and thrive through meaningful relationships and engaging learning experiences.

Ever had one of those "What should I be doing with my child?" moments? You might already have the answer at home.

Earlier this year, every Goodstart family received a What & When for Families guide for each child. If it's been tucked away in a drawer since then, now might be the perfect time to pull it back out.

The guide is packed with simple, play-based activities that support your child's learning and development at home. Best of all, it's written in your child's voice, with ideas tailored to their age and developmental stage.

From singing songs with babies and playing peek-a-boo, to "I Spy" games, storytelling and treasure hunts with older children, the activities are designed to fit naturally into everyday moments you already share together.
