Sustainable h**p scrubs trialled by our Allied Health staff 🌿

🤝 Allied Health staff at Barossa Hills Fleurieu Local Health Network (BHFLHN) are helping trial what could become one of Australia's first h**p scrub options for healthcare workers.

The initiative was developed at Southern Fleurieu Health Service, Victor Harbor, with support from the BHFLHN Climate Action Steering Committee and Adelaide-based business H**p Clothing Australia

🌍 H**p is a natural fibre that offers many benefits, including durability, breathability and moisture management. It is also biodegradable and highly renewable, helping to reduce environmental impact.

The project was inspired by local sustainability work led by social worker Crystal, a member of the Climate Action Committee and the Fleurieu Sustainable Fashion Gang, which has already introduced h**p uniform options in Fleurieu schools.

👩‍⚕️ The first scrub samples are now being tested by Allied Health staff to assess comfort, durability and functionality. Early feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with further design refinements planned before a potential launch in late 2026 or early 2027.

👏 Thank you to the BHFLHN Climate Action Steering Committee, Allied Health Team Leader Alex Longbottom and interim Team Leader Luke Collopy for supporting this innovative project.

💚 This initiative showcases how BHFLHN staff are developing practical sustainability solutions that benefit both healthcare workers and the environment.

Expressions of interest are now open for the 2027 Single Employer Model intake. Applications close on 9 October.

BHFLHN medical officer Dr Bosco Lawrence chose the Single Employer Model because it provided the stability and support he was looking for while pursuing a career in rural general practice.

As part of his training, Dr Lawrence is currently undertaking a community placement at Tanunda Medical Centre in the Barossa Valley. Experiences like this help develop the rural medical workforce that regional communities rely on to access care close to home.

"One of the barriers to general practice is the uncertainty around income and the business side of running a practice. The Single Employer Model provides stability while you're training."

For Dr Lawrence, one of the greatest rewards of rural medicine is the opportunity to build strong relationships with patients and communities.

"Patients trust you, and because it's a smaller community, you build genuine relationships. That's incredibly rewarding."

If you're a PGY3+ doctor or Junior Medical Officer considering rural GP or rural generalist training, now is the time to apply.

CSSD unit is such an important part of our health service here on the Fleurieu - thank Vicki and Ella!!

Grandmother and granddaughter duo Vicki and Ella work side by side in the Central Sterile Services Department at Southern Fleurieu Health Service, part of the Barossa Hills Fleurieu Local Health Network (BHFLHN).

Vicki has been part of the team for 18 years, bringing a wealth of experience, dedication and local knowledge. Her granddaughter Ella began her journey through a placement with BHFLHN and has now been a valued member of the team for four years.

Together, they represent the strength of shared knowledge, mentorship and the rewarding career pathways available in regional healthcare.

Behind the scenes, the Central Sterile Services Department team is responsible for the cleaning, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilisation, storage and distribution of reusable surgical instruments and equipment used across the health service. While much of this work happens out of sight, it plays a vital role in supporting safe surgery, preventing infection and delivering high-quality patient care.

Their story is a reminder that great healthcare depends on dedicated teams at every stage of the patient journey, helping us deliver safe, high-quality care close to home. ❤️
