What happens when you bring together 36 women, a bus trip, a behind-the-scenes cotton gin tour and a delicious lunch? A brilliant day of learning, laughter and new connections!

Recently, 36 women from Hay and surrounding communities hit the road to Whitton for the AgriWomen connect bus tour: cotton, community and connections, delivered by the Hay Women's Network in partnership with Riverina Local Land Services.

✅ First stop – Southern Cotton!

The group enjoyed an exclusive look behind the scenes, with CEO Kate O'Callaghan sharing the inspiring story of how 4 local farming families joined forces to establish the cotton gin and support growers in southern NSW.

From paddock to product, participants discovered the technology behind cotton processing and the important role the industry plays in the Riverina economy.

🍴 Next stop – Whitton Malt House

A networking lunch provided the perfect opportunity to swap stories, share experiences and build connections with other women working in agriculture, agribusiness and rural communities.

A huge thank you to the Hay Women's Network, Southern Cotton, Kate O'Callaghan and everyone who joined us for such a fantastic day.

Wild ideas, inspiring people and a big future for our threatened species! 🐸🦉

What happens when you bring together 110 passionate people, leading researchers and conservation experts, all with one shared goal? A pretty WILD day of learning, collaboration and inspiration! 🙌

Last month, we proudly hosted our inaugural Wild futures threatened species forum in , bringing together people from across the Riverina Highlands to explore how we can better protect our region's incredible biodiversity.

From alpine ecosystems to woodlands and waterways, the day was packed with fascinating insights, practical conservation ideas and conversations about the future of our threatened species.

A huge highlight was hearing from renowned ecologist Professor David Lindenmayer, who delivered an inspiring keynote on the challenges and opportunities facing threatened species conservation in Australia.

With 14 presentations exploring threatened species, cultural connections and conservation efforts, there was certainly no shortage of knowledge in the room!

What's happening to saltbush on the ? 🔎

Have you noticed patches of perennial saltbush looking a little worse for wear, or even losing their leaves completely?

We're investigating significant saltbush dieback across the Hay Plains, with several species affected, particularly bladder saltbush.

Here's what we know so far:
👉 Dieback is occurring in both grazed and non-grazed areas, with some plants completely defoliated.
👉 Some evidence of borer damage has been found but the exact cause is yet to be determined.
👉 Recent rainfall has encouraged some regeneration, although recovery is expected to take significant time.

Our NSW Government Local Land Services team is working with an experienced rangeland ecologist and investigating reports from landholders to better understand what's happening.

👀 Have you spotted something similar on your property? Your observations could help us piece together the puzzle! Get in touch with Sally Ware at [email protected] to share what you've seen or find out more.

New home alert - and we have a very curious potential tenant! 🐾🌿

We've got some very exciting news from our Greater glider recovery project!

One of our wonderful participating landholders sent us this incredible footage of an endangered greater glider checking out a newly installed nest box on their property! And we think it's safe to say the local real estate market has caught its attention!

Why is this such a big deal?
Greater gliders rely on hollows in mature trees for shelter and breeding, but many of these vital habitat trees were lost during the bushfires.

As part of our recovery project, specially designed nest boxes are being installed to provide alternative homes while natural habitat recovers.

Thanks to a solar-powered trail camera, we've been able to catch this little visitor in action – and it's fantastic to see these new homes already attracting some interest!

🎥 Watch the footage and see our curious house hunter for yourself!

Talking nitrogen, crop performance and all things harvest at ! 🚜

The heat was on and the flies were out in force at the Ganmain cereal crop agronomy field walk earlier this month – a sure sign that harvest is just around the corner! ☀️

Hosted in collaboration with Brill Ag, the field walk brought together 33 attendees for a closer look at nitrogen use efficiency demonstration site ahead of harvest.

Rohan Brill and Graeme Sandral walked landholders through the trial, exploring how nitrogen timing, placement, product choice and rainfall can influence crop uptake and nitrogen losses. 🌱

The demonstration site is also investigating ways to get the most out of applied nitrogen, including the use of urease inhibitors and chicken litter.

👏 A big thank you to everyone who braved the heat (and flies!) to join us, and to Brill Ag for helping deliver a fantastic day of learning and discussion.

The real test is just around the corner! We'll be analysing the demonstration results following harvest, so stay tuned to see what the numbers reveal.

How to distinguish between visual tags and eID device? 🐑🐐

If you don’t have an eID scanner, use the printed numbers to check if a device is electronic.

1️⃣ A National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) eID device will have a 16-digit code starting with a PIC.
2️⃣ A NLIS visual tag will have just the 8-digit PIC code.

If your sheep or goat already has an NLIS visual tag, leave it in and add an NLIS eID device.

Remember, an animal can have multiple NLIS visual tags, but only one eID.

From 1 January 2027, all sheep and goats of any age must have one NLIS eID device before they leave any property.
