With many planning a long weekend, it’s a good time to check in on your health and be prepared for the spring weather.

🌿 Hay fever and thunderstorm asthma
Grass pollen season is underway, bringing an increased risk of thunderstorm asthma across Victoria. It can affect people with asthma or hay fever, including those who have never had asthma before.

A few simple steps can help you prepare:
• If you have asthma, make sure your asthma action plan is up to date, take your preventer as prescribed and carry your reliever.
• If you have hay fever, speak with your GP or pharmacist about managing your symptoms.
• Check the thunderstorm asthma risk forecast through the VicEmergency app or website.
• If thunderstorms are forecast, avoid being outdoors, particularly in the strong winds that can arrive before a storm. Head inside and close doors and windows.

If someone is having an asthma attack and their breathing doesn't return to normal after first aid, call Triple Zero (000).

Find out more about thunderstorm asthma and how to prepare at the Better Health Channel: https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/thunderstorm-asthma

We are deeply saddened by yesterday’s tragic incident involving Dr Helen Haines. Our thoughts are with Helen, her family, friends and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.

As a valued and respected former member of the Northeast Health Wangaratta team and a dedicated contributor to the wellbeing of our region, Helen has touched many lives through her service, leadership and commitment to community.

We also acknowledge and thank our staff who responded and provided care and support in challenging circumstances yesterday. Their focus remained, as it always does, on providing safe, compassionate care to those in need.

Along with our broader community, we hold Helen and her loved ones in our thoughts at this difficult time.
