🔥 The state fire permit period stars on the 29th of October. You can still light fires on your property but you will need a permit to do so. 🔥

📞 Free call 1800 000 699

A statewide Fire Permit Period will start at 2am tomorrow, Thursday, 29 October, 2026.

This means fire permits will be required across the state from this time.

If you have a property and you wish to conduct a burn (larger than 1 cubic metre in size) on your property, you will need to apply for a free fire permit, by submitting an application online at https://www.fire.tas.gov.au/total-fire-bans-fire-permits-burn-registrations/ or free-call 1800 000 699.

During a Fire Permit Period, a permit is required by individuals intending to light a fire for burning vegetation or for a similar purpose. Permits are also required for fires at a sawmill or factory for burning wood waste or other flammable material.

Fires for cooking, warmth or disposal of garden waste do not require a permit provided that:
• It is one cubic metre or less in size.
• The fire is not lit in peat, humus or marram grass.
• The fire is attended by a responsible adult at all times until it is extinguished.
• All flammable material is removed for at least three metres radius from the fire.

Reminder: All fires lit in the open at any time of the year should be registered with the Tasmania Fire Service online via https://www.fire.tas.gov.au/total-fire-bans-fire-permits-burn-registrations/ or free-call 1800 000 699.

Remember:
• Some local government authorities prohibit backyard burning in residential areas.
• Fire may only be lit with the authority of the landowner.
• Fires must not be allowed to spread to neighbouring property.
• Neighbours should be informed of an intention to light a fire.

Great work guys!

Weymouth Fire Brigade assisted a pet owner to safely rescue their dog who was stuck under their house at Lulworth on Sunday night.

Close to midnight, Weymouth Fire Brigade's newly elected Brigade Chief Dave Moir, Second Officer Matt Smith, and Firefighter Graeme Bowkett - who are all local community members - responded to a request for assistance from the owner who didn't know who else to call.

Whilst this isn't a common incident for Tasmania Fire Service, it's an example of the amazing work of our career and volunteer members, their sense of teamwork, and commitment to helping the community.

Heading out in the night away from families to support others in their community is what our members do best.

⛺️⛺️Please note that Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife have banned campfires in public reserves here on the North Coast, starting Monday 26th. ⛺️⛺️

Campfires will be banned in national parks and reserves in the following municipalities from 2am on Monday 26 October 2026:

Break O'Day, Brighton, Central Highlands, Clarence, Derwent Valley, Dorset, Flinders, George Town, Glamorgan-Spring Bay (including Maria Island), Glenorchy, Hobart, Huon Valley, Kingborough (including Bruny Island), Latrobe, Launceston, Northern Midlands, Sorell, Southern Midlands, Tasman and West Tamar.

The bans apply to campfires, pot fires and other solid fuel stoves. Gas stoves and gas barbecues are permitted.

Preventing human-caused bushfires is a shared responsibility. Following campfire rules helps protect lives, communities, and Tasmania’s unique natural and cultural values.

🔥 Tasmanians are being urged to take extra caution against bushfires over the coming days, with increased fire danger weather forecast for several parts of the state on Saturday.

A high fire danger rating has been forecast for North East, East Coast, Midlands, Upper Derwent Valley, South East and Central Plateau districts due to warmer, dry weather and gusty westerly winds.

These conditions mean that fires can start easily and spread quickly.

While there are currently no fire restrictions in place and the Fire Permit Period has not yet commenced, we're asking the community to take a few simple steps to help keep Tasmania safe:

✅ Check any campfires, burn-offs or fire pits lit in recent days or weeks and make sure they are fully extinguished. Remember: soak it, stir it, soak it again.
✅ Review your bushfire survival plan so you know what you'll do if a fire starts.
✅ Stay informed through the TasALERT app, TasALERT or ABC Local Radio.
✅ If you see smoke, flames, or a fire that appears to have reignited, don't assume someone else has reported it. Call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

We're working hard to keep the community safe, but everyone has a role to play in reducing fire risk.

🌧️ A wet morning here on the north coast. 🌧️

October training and practice involved exercises to prepare for the coming bush-fire season.
Practice with management of burning fuel, conservation of water and use of equipment.
Monitoring of fuels and fire behaviour, surprisingly active considering there was only a light southerly wind with rain imminent.
