31 October 2026, CANBERRA — Filipino folklore, mythology, and animation took center stage in Canberra on Halloween as the Philippine Embassy in Canberra, in partnership with the Australian National University (ANU) Film Group, hosted a special screening of Forgotten Island at the Lowitja O’Donoghue Cultural Centre. The event brought together more than 150 guests from the diplomatic corps and the Filipino-Australian community.

Philippine Ambassador to Australia H.E. Antonio A. Morales highlighted the screening as an opportunity to bring “a little piece of the Philippines to Canberra” and to share Filipino stories and culture with Australian audiences.

The special screening also formed part of the Embassy’s cultural activities marking the 80th anniversary of Philippines-Australia diplomatic relations. Ambassador Morales noted that the film offers a meaningful way to discover more of the Philippines and appreciate Filipino creative prowess.

Forgotten Island is DreamWorks Animation’s first animated feature which focuses on Filipino culture and mythology. Drawing inspiration from the Philippines’ rich folklore, the film brings mythical creatures, fantastical worlds and stories passed down through generations to the screen.

The film also champions Filipino talent in the creative industries. Philippine-based Snipple Animation Studios contributed hand-drawn 2D and anime-inspired animation sequences, while its soundtrack features Filipino and international artists, including girl group BINI, Lea Salonga, SB19 and Sophia Laforteza of KATSEYE, alongside original songs by Ruby Ibarra, H.E.R. and Liza Soberano.

Adding to the Halloween celebration, guests were encouraged to come in costume, with prizes awarded for the evening’s Best in Costume competition. The honors went to Jack Dwyer, William Dwyer and Huxley Dwyer who came dressed as a warrior, knight, and Elsa from Frozen, respectively. Guests also enjoyed a selection of Filipino snacks and drinks as part of the evening’s Trick-or-Treat festivities. - END

The Embassy processed 128 passport applications, facilitated the reacquisition of Philippine citizenship of 19 dual citizens pursuant to the Citizenship Retention and Reacquisition Act of 2003, and registered 73 overseas voters. 15 October 2026, CANBERRA — The Philippine Embassy in Canberra joined the opening of Filipino-Australian artist Kris Ancog’s solo exhibition, Yearning to Breathe Free, at Aarwun Gallery in Nicholls in celebration of Museums and Galleries Month.

Chargé d’Affaires a.i. Sheila Marie Tario, together with Embassy personnel, attended the opening night, which brought together members of Canberra’s arts community and guests to view Ancog’s latest body of work.

Yearning to Breathe Free explores themes of displacement, resilience, renewal and the search for belonging. Drawing inspiration from the experiences of refugees seeking safety and rebuilding their lives in unfamiliar places, the exhibition reflects on the universal desire to find home. Mr. Ancog’s works combine influences from classical European painting with contemporary abstraction, creating atmospheric works centred on light, colour and movement. As a Filipino-Australian artist, Mr. Ancog’s work also reflects the growing contribution of Filipinos and Filipino-Australians to Australia’s cultural and creative landscape.

Yearning to Breathe Free is on display at Aarwun Gallery, Shop 11, Federation Square, O’Hanlon Place, Nicholls, ACT, until 08 November 2026.

The Museums and Galleries Month is being celebrated in October, pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 798, s. 19911, to highlight the role of museums and galleries in preserving the country’s cultural heritage and history. The observance recognizes that making cultural and art forms as well as historical heritage accessible to all is integral to nation building and necessary for shaping national destiny.

This year’s theme, “Bridging Divides, Preserving the Present for Tomorrow,” calls attention to museums and galleries as living spaces for cultural exchange and are made meaningful through the sharing of people’s histories, experiences, and narratives across generations and backgrounds. - END

14 October 2026, CANBERRA – The Philippine Embassy welcomed representatives of Australian-Filipino Community Services (AFCS), a Victoria-based non-profit organization, for a discussion on programs and initiatives supporting the Filipino community in Australia.

The delegation included AFCS CEO Corina Dutlow, Community Social Worker and Respite Team Leader/Coordinator Jamie Lalwet, Board Member Jennelyn Eliseo, and Community Worker Erick Delos Reyes. They highlighted AFCS’s work in culturally responsive aged care, dementia support, youth engagement, and community services for Filipinos in Australia.

Among the programs presented was “Maharlika Lodge™: Australia’s First Filipino Dementia Respite Home,” an initiative providing culturally appropriate dementia respite care for Filipino families. Its development has been informed by dementia awareness initiatives, engagement with dementia and Alzheimer’s organizations in the Philippines, and efforts to strengthen the capacity of care staff through specialist knowledge, culturally appropriate screening tools, and resources in the Filipino language.

AFCS also shared its youth engagement initiatives to support Filipino-Australian youth and strengthen their connection to their heritage. Initially engaging young people through performing arts, AFCS has since expanded its approach to include language and cultural learning, career development, and opportunities for meaningful engagement with the Filipino diaspora.

A key highlight is the cultural immersion program organized in partnership with the Commission on Filipinos Overseas, which brings young Filipino Australians closer to their heritage through language workshops, museum visits, and cultural activities. The initiative seeks to make heritage education more accessible to young people and establish the program as a sustainable annual initiative with nationwide reach. The partnership also reflects a significant investment in supporting Filipino youth in their career development and cultural identity.

The delegation also shared three films showcasing AFCS’s work and experiences of the Filipino community: I Am Filipino Enough, Meaningful Memories at Maharlika Lodge, and Carers’ Reflections.

Established in the 1990s, AFCS is a charitable, non-profit organization that initially focused on addressing domestic violence and assisting newly arrived migrants. Built on a strong foundation of voluntary community service, the organization has since expanded its programs to respond to the evolving needs of Filipino Australians. Its work in Victoria has also informed initiatives in New South Wales to contribute to its culturally specific aged care and community services.

The AFCS also highlighted its participation in the Federation of Ethnic Communities' Councils of Australia (FECCA) 2026 National Conference in Canberra, which brought together community leaders and delegates from across Australia to celebrate cultural diversity and discuss the future of multiculturalism. Her Excellency the Honourable Sam Mostyn AC, Governor-General of Australia, was announced as the new Patron of FECCA. - END

28-30 September 2026, ADELAIDE — The Philippines highlighted the importance of skills development, workforce mobility, and stronger business and people-to-people connections in deepening economic ties with Australia and ASEAN at the Australia–ASEAN Business Forum in Adelaide.

Held under the theme “Deepening Australia–ASEAN Economic Integration in a Changing Global Landscape,” the forum brought together government officials, academics, ASEAN leaders, industry executives, investors, and policymakers to discuss opportunities in energy transition and green technology, digital transformation and artificial intelligence, agrifood and food security, infrastructure and sustainable development, and human capital and skills development.

Philippine Ambassador to Australia Antonio A. Morales participated in the panel discussion, “Developing Future Talent: Skills, Education and Workforce Mobility,” moderated by Ms. Lori Hocking, Pro Vice Chancellor for Global Partnerships at Adelaide University.

Ambassador Morales shared the Philippine experience in workforce development, emphasizing the need to upskill workers and align education and training with evolving industry requirements through closer cooperation among governments, educational institutions, and industry. He also underscored the importance of skills recognition and the recognition of educational qualifications in facilitating workforce mobility and helping workers apply their competencies across borders.

He noted that international mobility can provide Filipino workers with broader career opportunities, potentially higher earnings, and exposure to new skills and technologies. At the same time, he highlighted the importance of maintaining an adequate supply of skilled and productive workers in the Philippines while maximizing the benefits of international mobility. He stressed that orderly and well-managed migration systems are essential to protecting migrant workers and enabling both origin and destination countries to benefit from workforce mobility.

Ambassador Morales also noted the role of ASEAN frameworks in facilitating the mobility of professionals and skilled workers in the region, including through mutual recognition arrangements for selected professions. These initiatives underscore the importance of regional cooperation in skills recognition, education and training, and the development of a workforce equipped to respond to evolving industry needs.

Mr. Rafael Toda, President of the Australia-Philippines Business Council, participated in the panel discussion, “Driving Trade, Investment and Connectivity Across Australia and ASEAN.” He highlighted gaps in mutual understanding between Australia and ASEAN, emphasizing that cultural fluency, awareness, and genuine engagement are important to building meaningful, long-term business relationships. Stronger personal connections and a deeper understanding of regional markets, he noted, can help translate shared economic interests into concrete business partnerships and investment opportunities.

Mr. Joey Concepcion, Chairman of the ASEAN Business Advisory Council–Philippines, delivered remarks on “The Future of the Australia–ASEAN Economic Partnership in a Changing Global Landscape” and closing remarks at the Gala Reception. He emphasized the importance of sustained private-sector partnerships in expanding economic opportunities and promoting inclusive growth across the region. He also invited participants to attend the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit in Manila on 14–15 November 2026, providing another opportunity for business leaders and stakeholders to strengthen partnerships and explore avenues for regional economic cooperation.

The Philippines also maintained a booth in the forum’s exhibition area showcasing the country’s trade and investment opportunities and tourism destinations. Mr. Emmanuel Ang, Commercial Counsellor of the Philippine Trade and Investment Center, and Philippine Honorary Consul in Adelaide Carmen Garcia also participated in the forum, supporting efforts to promote the Philippines as a destination for trade, investment, and tourism.

The Philippines’ participation is part of its continued efforts to deepen economic ties with Australia and ASEAN by strengthening connections among people, businesses, and institutions. Through cooperation in education, skills development, workforce mobility, trade, and investment, the Philippines seeks to contribute to a more connected and inclusive regional economy. END
