🌺 Why We Wear the Poppy 🌺

In May 1915, near Ypres, Belgium, Canadian doctor Lt.-Col. John McCrae saw poppies blooming among the graves of fallen soldiers. Moved by the loss of his friend, he wrote “In Flanders Fields,” one of the most famous poems of the First World War.

The poem inspired others to adopt the poppy as a symbol of remembrance. In July 1921, the Great War Veterans Association, the forerunner of the Royal Canadian Legion, made the poppy Canada’s official flower of remembrance.

More than a century later, the poppy still honours the Canadians who served and sacrificed, and donations to the Poppy Campaign go directly to supporting Veterans and their families.

This Remembrance season, the Town of Gibbons invites residents to wear a poppy with pride.

Lest We Forget. 🇨🇦
