Not everyone experiencing homelessness is the same.

People become homeless for many different reasons, and every person has their own story. Let’s look beyond stereotypes and take the time to understand the person, not just their situation.

Replace judgment with empathy. Everyone deserves dignity, compassion and a safe place to call home.

There are many reasons people experience homelessness.
Homelessness is not a choice.

Circumstances such as a lack of affordable housing, financial hardship, family breakdown, job loss, violence, health challenges and other life circumstances can all contribute to someone losing their housing.

Behind every person experiencing homelessness is a person with their own story, challenges and strengths.

Everyone deserves dignity, compassion and stable housing.
As a community, we can move beyond assumptions, better understand the realities of homelessness and take action to create a path forward.

Welcome to the Path Forward series.

This campaign is about addressing the stigma surrounding homelessness and helping our community better understand the experiences of people who are without a home.

Homelessness is a community issue, and addressing it requires all of us to understand the issue, challenge stigma and take action together.

At the DSSAB, we are working to make homelessness rare, brief and non-recurring through our Encampment Response Plan and throughout the implementation of our 10-Year Housing and Homelessness Plan.

Over the coming days, we will work to move beyond stereotypes, challenge misconceptions, build compassion and explore how we can take meaningful action as a community.

There is a path forward, and it starts with understanding, compassion and action.
