Myth vs. Fact Friday: Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Myth: “If breast cancer doesn’t run in my family, I don’t need to worry.”

Fact: Most people diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history of the disease. While having a close relative with breast cancer can increase someone’s risk, it is not the only factor—and it does not mean you are protected if there is no family history.

Breast cancer can affect people of different ages, backgrounds, and family histories. That’s why it’s important to know what is normal for your body, be aware of changes such as a new lump, skin changes, ni**le changes, or persistent pain, and speak with a healthcare provider if something doesn’t feel right.

Following recommended screening guidelines is also one of the most important steps you can take. Regular screening can help detect breast cancer earlier, when treatment may be more effective. If you’re unsure when to begin screening or how often to go, talk to your healthcare provider about the plan that’s right for you.

💗 Know your body. Know your risk. Don’t wait for a family history to take action.

Thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday for the Supporting Ourselves and Others Through Grief workshop.

Grief touches each of us differently, and we are grateful to everyone who came together to learn, share, and reflect in such a thoughtful and compassionate space. Whether you attended to support your own grief journey or to better support someone in your care, your presence helped create a meaningful and supportive conversation.

We hope you left with practical tools, greater understanding, and a reminder that grief is not something we have to navigate alone. Caring for ourselves and showing up for others can make a real difference.

Please keep an eye on your email — a follow-up message will be sent soon with the resources discussed during the workshop, so you can revisit the information and continue exploring the supports available to you.

Thank you again for spending the day with us and for helping build a community where grief can be acknowledged, supported, and met with compassion.
