Designated a National Historic Site in 2008, Thinkers Lodge is the birthplace of the Pugwash Movement

"Thinkers Lodge" is known as the birthplace of the Pugwash movement, a transnational organization that has led the movement for a nuclear free world. In 1957, at the height of the Cold War, the first Pugwash Conference on Science and World Affairs took place here. Scientists from both sides of the Iron Curtain met to discuss the threat of nuclear weapons and the responsibility of scientists to work for their eradication. This signature event led to a Nobel Prize for Peace, awarded in 1995 and shared by Joseph Rotblat and the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs. This Nobel Prize together with Cyrus Eaton's Lenin Peace Prize are both on display as part of the interpretive exhibit at the site.

Announcing our Thinkers Lodge 2027 calendars for sale now.! A unique fundraiser, this calendar will have photos that capture the season and many events that happen here. The calendars will be available this December for $25 each. Much like pre-ordering lobster rolls in July, you can send an e-transfer to [email protected]. Please include your full name, address, and the number of calendars you wish to purchase. The deadline for your order is the 21st of November. If you prefer an alternative payment method, please send an email to [email protected]. Stay tuned for the date to pick up your calendar at the Gatehouse in December. If you live far away, we could mail it to you.

The Gatehouse has a new roof. We found a very old shoe in the north side of the old roof!! And a book in the south side of the roof! It was a medieval custom to hide a shoe in the roof to prevent evil from entering the home. Whoever built the original Gatehouse must have believed in the charm of the concealed shoe. https://www.historicmysteries.com/history/concealed-shoes/21150/ But that doesn't explain the mystery of the book. We put a loonie in the shoe and left it in the roof for the next builders to find. We kept the book.

Wedding in the Greatroom today. The weather added a dramatic backdrop to this wedding. Cosy spaces for lovely people. Before the ceremony, a quote from Sir Bertram Russell was read, very appropriate for a wedding and the history of Thinkers Lodge. Not a dry eye in the room while the couple read their vows. Congratulations to a wonderful bride and groom!

Our 2026 winner of the Pugwash Park Commissioners $2000 scholarship is Samantha Winstanley, from Londonderry. Samantha graduated from Cobequid Educational Centre and plans to attend university to become an elementary teacher. Congratulations, Samantha!

A three day/Harbourfest wedding today. Happily, the rain stayed away as the couple celebrated their nuptials while remembering those who have passed before. Beautiful blue and white decore!
