On Sept 9, the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture held the Harbour Swim and Run Fundraiser (and BBQ) in benefit of the Shelburne Loyalist Food Bank.

Participants ran a 5km route around our downtown or swam 1.5 km across the harbour all in the midst of a cruise ship visit!

We truly appreciate the Dept of Fisheries and Aquaculture participants and volunteers for this wonderful event which raised just over $4000!

We would also like to thank Cooke Aquaculture and The Huskilson Group for their support of this event!

Today we met with some of the potters and restaurateurs who made the Empty Bowls Fundraiser such an incredible success!
We thank those who made the soup, those who made the bowls, those who purchased tickets and those who advertised, help set-up and clean-up!
A wonderful community event which nourishes others and ourselves 🙂

Next year we will try for a photo with everyone!

Today marks National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day focused on recognizing the tragic history and ongoing impacts of Canada's residential school system.

It is well documented that Indigenous households and communities are disproportionately affected by food insecurity. Across Canada, rates are roughly two to three times higher than that of the general population, with those living on reserve and those in northern communities being affected even more.

Ongoing colonialism and systemic barriers have created a massive negative impact on food sovereignty for Indigenous people, including land loss, a lack of access to traditional foods, and environmental racism. As food security and food sovereignty go hand in hand, it becomes more clear why Indigenous communities are so disprorportionately affected.

This Day for Truth and Reconciliation we encourage you to further research and reflect on the realities of Indigenous communities province (and country) wide and how you can engage in reconciliation in your own day to day life.

Wow….all we can say is wow and thank you, thank you, thank you!

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day are both observed annually on September 30th, and they are dedicated to honouring Residential School Survivors, their families, and communities, and to recognize the lasting impacts of Canada’s Residential School system. These commemorations provide an opportunity to deepen Canada’s understanding of the intergenerational effects of residential schools and to reflect on their enduring legacy as part of the ongoing journey toward truth, healing, and reconciliation.

On September 30, Canadians are encouraged to wear orange in honour of Residential School Survivors and their families, and in remembrance of the children who never returned home.
