On Sunday, October 18th Shelburne County REMO was present to observe a training exercise conducted by the newly renamed Shelburne County Ground Search and Rescue (GSAR)Team formerly Barrington GSAR.

This event was a multi agency exercise which included RCMP, Canadian Air Search and Rescue Association and Yarmouth Search and Rescue.
Also present were the Honourable Kim Masland (Minister of Emergency Management) and the NS Department of Emergency Management (DEM) and representatives from The Municipality of Shelburne and The Municipality of Barrington.

This exercise was intended to re-enforce the team’s skills such as keeping a patient warm and sheltered until preparations can be made to transport them to safety, organized grid searches, communications, and interagency cooperation.

Shelburne County GSAR is made up of incredibly dedicated and skilled members who spend countless hours on missing person searches hiking through extremely difficult terrain, maintaining and expanding skills during organized training, maintaining equipment, fundraising, public education, and much more.

Shelburne County GSAR is an invaluable emergency service for our communities. They respond to remote rescues and missing person searches throughout Shelburne County and all of Nova Scotia. They are also a vital resource for REMO’s. They bring extensive incident command experience, communications capabilities, and highly skilled searchers that can be utilized for wellness checks and evacuations during large scale emergencies.

The province is currently working on a modernization initiative for GSAR in Nova Scotia and Shelburne County REMO is excited to work closely with Shelburne County GSAR to assist in this modernization initiative and ensure that they can continue to provide the critical service they bring to our communities.
