Heritage NL Heritage NL - safeguarding our historic places and living heritage since 1984.

Established by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador in 1984, Heritage NL is managed by a government-appointed board of directors with representation from across the province. Heritage NL has a mandate to help preserve the rich heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador. In addition to encouraging and supporting the preservation of the province’s architectural heritage, we actively promote the safeguarding of our rich intangible cultural heritage. We do this through programs that recognize the province’s built and intangible heritage, by providing financial support for built heritage preservation, and through educational and outreach initiatives. Heritage NL designates Registered Heritage Structures in the province, which makes them eligible for restoration grants. As well, it designates Registered Heritage Districts to support their preservation, management and development. Our educational and outreach efforts include an annual Heritage Poster Contest targeted to K-12 students and a program to assist municipalities to inventory cultural resources and identify measures to protect and develop them. In addition to our programs we offer advice and information on a variety of topics including: preserving and restoring heritage buildings; cultural mapping; protecting heritage districts; utilizing heritage resources for community development; and undertaking community oral history and intangible cultural heritage projects.

Heritage NL, in partnership with the Mummers Festival and Torbay History House, is holding a Mummer Memories Mug Up and Scanning Party. A Memory Mug Up is an informal story sharing session for community members, where people gather, have a cup of tea and a lunch, and share memories. At this Mug Up we will be chatting about mummering/janneying. If you have old printed pictures of mummers/janneys that you would like to share, bring them along and we will digitally scan and preserve them for future generations.

SSAC 2027: Call for Sessions
Society for the Study of Architecture in Canada – 52nd Annual Conference
Sainte-Marie among the Hurons & Discovery Harbour (Midland & Penetanguishene, ON)
May 11-13, 2027
Theme: Successive Presents

The 52nd annual conference will be held from May 11 to 13, 2027 at Sainte-Marie among the Hurons and Discovery Harbour, on the traditional and Treaty territory of the Anishinabek people and within the ancestral homeland of the Wendat Nation. These lands give us pause to think about “successive presents,” the phrase coined by Pierre Nora in his Lieux de mémoire/Realms of Memory (1992/1996) to describe “the way in which traditions are constituted and passed on.” First Nations, Métis, and Inuit understandings of place ask us, in turn, to consider relationships to land as living and ongoing, sustained through knowledge, practice, and responsibility across generations. UNESCO’s concept of intangible cultural heritage similarly draws attention to living traditions and their contribution to spatial presence, continually evolving in response to the environment and through the transmission of intergenerational knowledge. The SSAC provides a space for such plurality of approaches, methodologies, and areas of study. Session proposals are welcomed from across disciplines and forms of practice, addressing new research, ongoing work, and questions shaping the field.

Sessions may address architectural and craft histories, contemporary practice, community-based approaches, land and spatial narratives, heritage, theory, design, pedagogy, or other questions concerning the creation, experience, interpretation, and transformation of the built environment in Canada.

Those interested in chairing a session are invited to submit their proposals by email to [email protected] no later than December 7, 2026.

We look forward to welcoming you to Sainte-Marie among the Hurons and Discovery Harbour in May 2027- whether you are a long-time participant or joining us for the first time. This 52nd conference will be an opportunity to reconnect, discover, and bring together the many voices that shape the SSAC community.
