💬 How much attention are Canadians paying to Taiwan these days? A series of recent book events right here in British Columbia offers a pretty good clue!
On June 17th and 18th, the Canadian International Council (CIC) hosted two talks featuring the monograph “Inspired By Taiwan” on Vancouver Island that were nearly standing-room only. Packed from corner to corner, the occasions reflected the growing interest amongst Canadians in ’s place on the global stage. George Takach, the book’s author, provided an incisive analysis on how Taiwan’s vibrant civil society transformed the country into a model for democracy, freedom, and technological innovation. Speaking from a Canadian perspective, he then underscored the critical importance of Taiwan’s semiconductor industry to global supply chains. Takach believes that ’s recalibration of economic ties with China will not diminish the level of exchanges and collaborations between Canada and Taiwan.
Following the enthusiastic response to the first two events, our office joined forces with the Canadian International Council to host an additional reception to celebrate the book in Downtown on June 22nd. During the event, Director General Liu recounted the long and arduous journey that Taiwan has taken to achieve its liberty. She acknowledged President Chiang Ching-kuo for implementing a Taiwanization policy and selecting Lee Teng-hui as his successor. After assuming office, President Lee worked together with the Tangwai movement to forge Taiwan into a fully-fledged democracy; and it is precisely because these freedoms were hard won that they must be guaranteed by a strong and credible national defence policy. Emphasizing how the Taiwanese people's determination to engage with the world will only become stronger with each act of coercion or suppression, Director General Liu hoped like-minded partners will continue to back Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations, including INTERPOL and the World Health Organization (WHO).
In addition, at the invitation of our office, George Takach visited the Taiwanese Canadian Cultural Society on June 21st to connect with the local chapter of the Formosa Association of Student Cultural Ambassadors, and gave a behind-the-scenes look at how “Inspired by Taiwan” came to be. During the event, Takach encouraged young Taiwanese Canadians to take pride in their heritage and confidently express their Taiwanese identity. He also urged them to seize opportunities to study, travel, and engage internationally, and use those experiences to introduce Taiwan to friends around the world, and hammer home the point that Taiwan is not part of China.
George Takach is a highly respected lawyer and public policy expert in Canada. He holds undergraduate degrees in History, Political Economy, and Philosophy from the University of Toronto, as well as a graduate degree from Carleton University’s Norman Paterson School of International Affairs and a JD from the University of Toronto. Prior to writing this book, he has practiced as a technology lawyer at McCarthy Tétrault, one of Canada’s leading law firms, for nearly four decades. ⚖️✨
When it comes to Canada-Taiwan relations, Takach’s knowledge runs deep. In a recent interview with seasoned broadcaster Steve Paikin, he discussed the legacy of Mackay Memorial Hospital and explored how Taiwan drew inspiration from Canada when developing its National Health Insurance system. He also went at great lengths to cover fun factoids, such as by revealing how the Canadian clothing brand 🦫 Roots enjoys remarkable popularity in Taiwan, with more retail locations there than in Canada itself! 😊👍

🤺 A Cut Above‼️ Leon Lee has clinched silver at the Asian Fencing Championships, becoming the first fencer from 🇹🇼 to qualify for the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games~
Fencing prodigy Leon Lee represented Taiwan this week at the FIE Asian Fencing Championships’ men’s individual senior épée in New Delhi with distinction. From the moment Leon stepped on the piste he was on a roll, delivering one impressive performance after another. Even world No. 7 veteran Ruslan Kurbanov from Kazakhstan couldn’t stop him. In the semifinal, Leon fended off wave after wave of attacks from Kurbanov, and secured a spot in the gold medal bout with a 15:12 win. While he ultimately fell short of the podium’s highest step, Leon emerged with a silver medal and a ticket to the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games!
What’s even more impressive is that this isn’t the first time Leon has crossed swords with history. Just four months ago, the 19-year old fencer helped the country’s epée team capture their first-ever gold medal at the Asian Junior Fencing Championships. With his blade blazing a new trail for Taiwan and the Asian Games now in his sights, we wish Leon all the best as he aims to be a cut above the rest! 🥳🎊

🌾 In homes across , the air is always rich with the irresistible aroma of whenever Dragon Boat Festival kicks off. And key to every delicious zongzi is this ! Packed with amylopectins, glutinous rice makes every bite soft, sticky and satisfyingly chewy when cooked. This makes them the perfect base for zongzi and many traditional rice dishes.
When it comes to wrapping zongzi, the Taiwanese commonly use long-grain glutinous rice, which is known for its Q-tastic texture. Different regions in the country have their own preferences. Some like to add round glutinous rice for a softer, stickier texture, while others like to mix in paste from Penglai rice for that extra depth in . Indigenous delicacies like abai and cinavu also feature local ingredients such as millet and taro flour, highlighting the diversity of Taiwan’s culinary traditions.
The many varieties of zongzi each have their dedicated fan base, but loyalties are divided most over northern and southern varieties. Northern-style zongzi are made by stir-frying the ingredients before steaming so that each rice kernel is distinct yet Q with each bite. Southern-style zongzi, on the other hand, are made with uncooked rice and boiled directly in water. This results in a softer texture infused with the fragrance of bamboo leaves. Both styles are delicious in their own way, and well worth a try!
No matter which zongzi is your favourite, these treats are a delicious reflection of Taiwan's rich food culture and local ingredients. So let's unwrap one of the nation's most beloved holiday traditions and to the occasion! Here’s to wishing everyone a happy Dragon Boat Festival filled with lots of zongzi and great company! 🇹🇼👌

🐳 Democratic Taiwan Stands Strong‼️Meeting with international correspondents at the Taipei Guest House today, President Lai Ching-te thanked journalists for their professionalism and dedication towards sharing 🇹🇼 ’s story with the world. Because of their reporting, more and more people around the world are recognizing Taiwan for what it is: a vibrant, diverse, and thriving democracy.
In his remarks, President Lai reflected on the country’s first direct presidential election in 1996. Despite facing missile threats from China at the time, Taiwanese voters turned out in record numbers. More than 76% of registered voters participated in the election and chose their own head of state, casting off the shadow of authoritarianism for good. Over the past three decades, Taiwan has continued to inculcate and strengthen its democratic orientation through regular elections and peaceful transfers of power, showing the world that:
❶ Sovereignty belongs to the people of Taiwan, and citizens have the right to choose their head of state as the ultimate bosses of the country.
❷ Taiwan’s democratic system derives its legitimacy directly from the will of its people, and the future of Taiwan can only be decided by its 23 million residents.
❸ The Republic of China (Taiwan) and the People’s Republic of China are not subordinate to one another, and Taiwan is not part of the PRC.
President Lai then highlighted Taiwan’s impressive achievements in recent years, noting that the country has earned international recognition not only for its democratic freedoms but also for its economic performance. According to the latest 2026 World Competitiveness Ranking released by the Institute for Management Development in Switzerland, Taiwan climbed to 4th place globally out of 70 economies, its highest ranking ever. Among economies with populations exceeding 20 million, Taiwan has remained No. 1 in the world for six consecutive years. Taiwan also improved to 5th globally in economic performance and 6th in government efficiency, while maintaining 4th place in business efficiency.
Taiwan’s leadership in global supply chains, advanced semiconductor manufacturing, AI applications, and computing infrastructure has earned the trust of international partners around the world. These accomplishments demonstrate how Taiwan’s commitment to democracy, freedom, and engagement with the international community has helped drive its prosperity and success.
Touching on developments in the Middle East and the ongoing war in Ukraine, President Lai rounded off his remarks by thanking the G7 for remaining committed towards peace and security in the Taiwan Strait amid an increasingly complex geopolitical environment. Referring to the G7 Évian leaders’ statement which resolutely opposed unilateral attempts to alter the status quo in the East China Sea, the South China Sea, and the Taiwan Strait through force or coercion, President Lai reiterated Taiwan’s commitment towards working with like-minded partners to advance peace and stability throughout the Indo-Pacific region, and called on authorities in Beijing to forgo confrontation with dialogue. Rounding off his remarks, President Lai hoped global media outlets will continue shine a light on Taiwan, so that more people around the world can appreciate a that is free, resilient, and full of life! 🤗✨

🦚 Most people know the Mikado pheasant, the iconic bird featured on our NT$1000 bill as 🇹🇼 ’s largest living endemic species. But did you know our country was home to an even bigger bird thousands of years ago?
A study from the National Taiwan University (NTU) in the eminent British journal Royal Society Open Science revealed that hundreds of thousands of years ago, Taiwan was inhabited by a giant endemic bird far larger than today’s Mikado pheasant. Since the species has long disappeared from Earth, researchers named it Pavo Miejue, or the Extinct ; its scientific name cleverly incorporates the Mandarin pronunciation of the term for extinction. This discovery was made by Associate Professor Tsai Cheng-hsiu and student researcher Lan Yong-jie at NTU’s Institute of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, together with German paleontologist Gerald Mayr.
The story began five years ago when retired teacher Hou Li-jen donated a remarkably well-preserved fossilized humerus (upper wing bone) to NTU. Researchers quickly realized they had stumbled upon something extraordinary. Measuring 131.4 millimetres long, the fossil bone was significantly larger than the roughly 80-millimetre humerus of a modern Mikado pheasant, which indicated that the ancient bird was truly massive. By analyzing the fossil’s geological layers, the team determined that the Extinct Peacock once roamed what is now during the Middle Pleistocene, roughly 400,000 to 800,000 years ago. At the time, Taiwan was home to an array of large animals, including sabre-toothed cats and the Formosan steppe mammoth, creating a rich prehistoric ecosystem. Researchers believe this giant bird may have even been prey for some of the era’s top predators.
As for what ultimately drove the species to extinction, the answer remains a mystery. The research team says more and scientific studies will be needed to piece together the full story. Nevertheless, the find has filled a major gap in the nation’s bird fossil record. Revealing valuable insights into how wildlife evolved over time, discoveries like these provide the scientific community with a long-term perspective needed to tackle pressing challenges to today. 🕵️✨

🏋️♂️ A Powerful Lift to Another World Record‼️ After arriving in yesterday, 🇹🇼 ’s powerlifting star Fan Chun-chia wasted no time making his mark at IPF’s 2026 World Open Classic Powerlifting Championships, capturing 🥇 in the men’s 74kg bench press category and setting a brand new world record in the process. Upon hearing the news, President Lai Ching-te immediately sent a congratulatory message praising Fan’s outstanding performance, and encouraged Taiwan’s athletes to keep pushing forward in pursuit of glory for both themselves and the nation.
Fan got off to a strong start with a successful 205kg opening lift, and established a commanding lead. But rather than playing it safe on his second attempt, he went straight for history, calling for 216kg on the bar and surpassing the 215.5kg world record he set at last year’s championships. Although his third attempt at 218kg came up just short, Fan’s 216kg was more than enough to land the gold medal and set a new world record. Delivering a strong overall performance, Fan finished with 781kg total (equivalent to 10 times his body weight of 73.65kg) to secure the bronze medal in the combined standings, putting Taiwan squarely on the map for powerlifting excellence.
According to the Ministry of Sports, the country’s powerlifters have been making steady strides in recent years and continue to set benchmarks in major competitions worldwide. Looking ahead, the ministry says it will continue to invest in our lifters so they can reach even greater heights on the global stage! 🥳🎉

🛠️ Embracing the spirit of pioneers who built the Silicon Mountain, and can forge an even stronger partnership‼️ On June 13th, our office joined forces with the Kelowna Taiwanese Cultural Society and the Kelowna Chamber of Commerce to host a screening of A Chip Odyssey. Elected officials, business leaders, expatriates and friends gathered to recount how visionary pioneers transformed Taiwan into a key player in the global supply chain. Director General Liu was pleased to join KTCS President Wayne Lai, UBCO Dual Degree Management Program Director Professor Eric Li, Kelowna Chamber of Commerce CEO George Greenwood, and Councillor Ron Cannan for an in-depth post-screening panelist discussion on Taiwan’s experience with building advanced industries with rigorous talent development.
The discussion began with an incisive look into the inspiring story of founder Morris Chang, who answered his country’s call at the age of 55 to build what would become one of the world’s most important semiconductor companies. The panelists underscored that Taiwan’s semiconductor success didn’t happen overnight. It was built through decades of long-term planning, investment, innovation, and talent development by government and industry; claims of Taiwan having stolen the chip industry are just wrong.
The conversation also touched on the changing global landscape and the opportunities it creates for closer cooperation between Taiwan and Canada. As the British Columbian government advances its Look West strategy and seeks to diversify trade beyond traditional markets, with a goal of ensuring that no single market accounts for more than 50% of the province’s export trade value, now is the time to enhance engagement with Taiwan. Director General Liu underscored that Taiwan’s strengths in cutting-edge technologies pair naturally with Canada’s abundant energy resources and critical minerals. Semiconductor manufacturing requires both reliable energy and key raw materials, making Taiwan and Canada highly complementary partners. There exists significant potential for both sides to expand trade and economic collaboration.
There are already great examples of this partnership in action. Kelowna-based technology company WTFast has worked with Chunghwa Telecom for over a decade to help gamers connect more smoothly to servers around the world. It then went on to have back-to-back projects with ASUS, MSI, and GIGABYTE to improve gaming and networking performance. Our government is also actively working to enhance the mobility of motivated innovators. Initiatives such as the National Development Council’s Taiwan Employment Gold Card, the Ministry of Economic Affairs’ Contact Taiwan job search platform, and the Ministry of Education’s scholarship programs are encouraging innovative students and professionals from Canada, the United States, and Europe to study, conduct research, and pursue careers with top-tier tech companies in Taiwan. Our doors are wide open for talented professionals from looking to maximize their potential. On the flip side, our government encourages Taiwanese students to expand their global perspectives by experiencing Canada. Whether it be in artificial intelligence, film and media, transitional justice, Indigenous revitalization, or other emerging fields, our countries have much to work on with each other.
Director General Liu concluded by emphasizing that Taiwan will continue working with like-minded partners to promote peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and throughout the wider Indo-Pacific region. She also hoped that more elected representatives and community leaders from Canada will visit Taiwan to experience its vibrant culture, incredible food, innovative industries, and world-class technology firsthand. By strengthening people-to-people ties and expanding cooperation, Taiwan and Canada can build an even stronger and resilient partnership for the future. 🚢✨

🚨Great News‼️🚨 🇹🇼 has been breaking new ground this weekend, racking up two impressive records in quick succession!
🏹 First up, archers Huang I-jou and Chang Cheng-Wei proved that they were born to hit the mark at the World Cup in Antalya. In a nail-biting compound mixed team final against Denmark, the duo stayed laser-focused under pressure, and ultimately pulled off a dramatic 158-157 win to secure ’s first gold in the tournament.
Huang and Chang were on fire throughout the competition, defeating Spain 154-150, Great Britain 160-156, the PRC 155-153, and the United States 157-154 on their way to the final. Even when they were trailing by a point after three ends in the final, they didn’t blink. Instead, they nailed it with four straight perfect 10s and snatched the top podium spot by a single point. 🥇👏
🏐 Meanwhile, our country’s women’s team made history in the Philippines by reaching the AVC Women’s Volleyball Cup final for the first time ever. Facing a seasoned South Korean team on the court, they fought valiantly point for point throughout the match, eventually taking home silver with scores of 19:25, 19:25 and 22:25. This is the best result that Team Taiwan has ever achieved in its AVC Cup odyssey so far, and exemplifies the determination and resilience of our volleyball warriors. Three players also landed individual awards, with Tsai Yu-chun, Chen Chiao-en, and Lin Chi-jung being named as Best Outside Hitter, Best Middle Blocker, and Best Libero, respectively.
This achievement is even more remarkable considering that Team Taiwan’s best finishes at previous editions of the AVC Challenge Cup and AVC Women’s Volleyball Cup were bronze medals. From four straight wins in the group stage to a dominant sweep over Kazakhstan in the semifinals, our volleyball stars have truly rewrote the record books. 🥈👌
Congratulations to Huang, Chang, and our women’s volleyball team. Your incredible performances have made Taiwan proud and shown the world what Taiwanese athletes can achieve! 🥳🎊
