Intense Low Pressure System Will Batter Manitoba with Strong Wind Gusts Tomorrow 🌬️
We have been closely monitoring a strong Colorado Low that has made its way into Southern Saskatchewan and will continue tracking northeast through the evening. This system will bring upwards of 50cm of snow across Northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba, along with the threat of prolonged freezing rain in an area that stretches from Lynn Lake northeast to the Nunavut border.
Despite the wintry precipitation being isolated to the northern portions of the two provinces, the impacts of this system will still be felt throughout the entirety of Manitoba in the form of strong wind gusts.
The winds will begin to pick up overnight in the Southwestern Manitoba, with gusts quickly ramping up to over 70km/h. These strong winds will spread across much of Central and Southern Manitoba through the morning, but they should die down slightly for the majority of Southern Manitoba during the afternoon. The rest of the province, however, will see the winds persist for several more hours before they dissipate from west to east starting overnight Saturday and through Sunday morning.
A secondary area of strong wind gusts will be associated with the snowfall in the north and this is also where the strongest winds of well over 100km/h are expected. The strength of these winds, combined with the falling snow, could lead to several hours blizzard conditions throughout the region.
Power outages are very likely across the province tomorrow due to the strong winds. Some of these outages could be widespread and prolonged in Northern Manitoba, especially where heavy freezing rain is expected to fall.
If you have any loose object laying around in your yard, you may want to take time this evening to make sure that everything is secure. We hope everyone stays safe and warm this weekend!
