🎬 DOK Leipzig is in full swing! As we shared recently, IDF is bringing four films to this year’s edition of DOK Leipzig: three titles selected for the DOK Film Market and one Ex Oriente Features project presented at DOK Preview International.

But that’s not all! Several films by our alumni are also part of the festival programme, so make sure to catch their screenings! ✨

This year’s festival also pays special tribute to Helena Třeštíková, one of the most acclaimed Czech documentary filmmakers, with a dedicated Hommage celebrating her remarkable career. We’re proud to have supported some of her films along the way and happy to see her work celebrated in Leipzig! ❤️

🇨🇿 IDF is based in Czechia, and the future of Czech documentary filmmaking is something we care deeply about. With major changes to public funding currently being discussed, we feel it is important to add our voice to the conversation.

Český dokument potřebuje stabilní financování a předvídatelné podmínky.

🎬 What does the future hold for Czech documentary filmmaking?

Join us at Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival for the presentation of the Study on the State of Czech Documentary Film, prepared by the Czech Audiovisual Producers’ Association (APA - Asociace producentů v audiovizi) in cooperation with us.

The study examines the opportunities and challenges facing Czech documentary filmmaking before the transformation of the Czech Film Fund into the Czech Audiovisual Fund. The presentation will also introduce a vision for the future of Czech documentaries, followed by a discussion on financing, public support, and cooperation between producers and broadcasters.

We're also happy to see two familiar faces taking part: Zdeněk Blaha, our former Programme Director, will co-moderate the discussion, while Ivana Pauerová Miloševič, a member of our Board and Head of the Documentary Department at Czech Television, will join the panel alongside representatives of other broadcasters and the Czech Audiovisual Fund.

13 films that took part in IDF activities are screening at the 30th Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival! Six are celebrating their world premieres, one its international premiere and six their Czech premieres.

🎬 Their journeys crossed ours at different stages. Some developed their projects through Ex Oriente Film, while others presented them at the Short Pitch Program at Millennium Docs Against Gravity or pitched at East Doc Forum. Some connected with potential co-producers through Co-Production Booster or showcased their projects at East Doc Market during East Doc Platform. Others gained international visibility through the East Doc catalogue or Czech Docs presentations.

Congratulations to all the teams, and see you in Jihlava! ✨

📅 Screening times are available at ji-hlava.com.

⌛️ Can death be overcome, or are we just getting better at imagining that it can? And what does the pursuit of immortality say about how we live?

We interviewed Dāvis Sīmanis about the decade he spent working on Death of Death, a film about those who hope to escape death, and those who put it on display.

Speaking about the fast evolution of AI and the ethics of filming people who want more time, Sīmanis reflects on what his journey through transhumanism, cryonics and longevity science ended up teaching him about the time he already has.

🎬 Presented at East Doc Forum 2021, Czech Docs: Coming Soon and East Doc Market 2025, the film is now part of the current KineDok collection.

🕯️ On 2 November, All Souls’ Day, KineDok presents special screenings of Death of Death. Find all screenings at https://kinedok.net/events

Three of our alumni films made the Documentary Shortlist of the European Film Awards! 🏆

▷ To Hold a Mountain (dir. Biljana Tutorov, Petar Glomazić), a mother and daughter defending their Montenegrin mountain from a planned NATO training ground.
▷ Rehearsals for a Revolution (dir. Pegah Ahangarani), more than 40 years of Iranian history told through family archives and five people close to the director.
▷ Letters from the Silenced Country (dir. Andrei Kutsila), today’s Belarus through the letters of people facing prison, repression and exile.

Between them, the films took part in our programmes from East Doc Platform, with East Doc Forum and East Doc Market, to Ex Oriente Film.

The 39th European Film Awards take place on 16 January 2027 in Athens. Fingers crossed!
