Wastewater treatment is only one part of the equation. Behind an effective wastewater management system lies an entire infrastructure designed to collect, transport, treat, reuse and safely manage wastewater every day.
In Bahrain, the Muharraq Sewage Treatment Plant is an example of how this infrastructure supports growing urban areas while contributing to more sustainable water management.
With a treatment capacity of 100,000 m³/day, the project combines wastewater treatment with the infrastructure required to convey flows from and to the communities it serves.
Part of the treated wastewater is reclaimed and reused for irrigation, urban services and industrial applications, helping reduce pressure on natural water resources.
But what makes infrastructure like this critical?
🔹 Collection — ensuring wastewater is efficiently collected across the catchment area.
🔹 Conveyance — moving it reliably through the deep gravity sewer to the treatment plant.
🔹 Treatment — applying the processes required to regenerate water of the appropriate quality.
🔹 Water reuse — giving treated wastewater a second life and reducing demand for alternative water sources.
🔹 Long-term operation — maintaining performance, reliability and service continuity over time.
As cities grow and water resources come under increasing pressure, wastewater infrastructure becomes much more than a sanitation service. It is an essential part of urban resilience and the water cycle.
At Almar Water Solutions, Muharraq is part of our experience developing and managing long-term water infrastructure designed around the needs of the communities it serves.
