Bedford Hospital This is the official page for Bedford Hospital, part of Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Frequently Asked Questions

1.

This is the official page for Bedford Hospital. You can also visit our website at www.bedfordshirehospitals.nhs.uk or follow our account on Twitter

Please note that this site is not monitored 24 hours a day and that cannot be used to give medical advice. In a medical emergency you should dial 999 and for non-urgent medical advice you should dial 111. How is the site managed? This site does not have a dedicated team to service the enquiries made through it. The staff who post the responses are doing so in addition to their main roles.

2. What can I post on the site? Please remember that Facebook is a public forum and is not the appropriate place for us to discuss specific cases or complaints. In such cases we may message you directly to inform you on how best to resolve your issue. Whilst we encourage healthy debate and appreciate that our users will have opinions on current events, we ask everyone to remember that this site has a large and diverse user base, so please be respectful when making your comments. Our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) is our dedicated department that deals with these enquiries and can be contacted via email at [email protected] or by phone on 01234 795814.

3. What is your deletion policy? Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust will remove any comments that are considered to be:

- Offensive
- Abusive
- Threatening
- Deliberately insensitive or inflammatory
- Contain links

We may remove posts that have no connection to the Trust as this site is for local healthcare information. It is inappropriate for us to comment on or host debates about actions being undertaken by other Trusts, other professional bodies or other countries. Where possible we will try to inform a user that their post has been deleted and offer an explanation as to why. However, as this site is not run by a dedicated team, we may not always be able to do this.

4. Why do you mention the names of some patients? Patients that we name in our articles and posts have agreed and signed to do so. Each patient fills out a consent form which must be signed by them and authorised by a responsible clinician if appropriate.

5. How can I contact you if I don’t want to post my questions on here? You can contact the communications team via email at [email protected]. Again please note that emails are not monitored 24 hours a day cannot be used to give medical advice. Alternatively, you can contact our PALS team (patient advice and liaison service) via email at [email protected].

Emma is the Deputy Therapy Lead for Bedfordshire Community Health Services.

She said: “The Home First model has transformed the way we support patients leaving hospital by focusing on what matters most to them: recovering in the place they know best, their own home.

“Evidence shows this approach leads to better outcomes, reduces the risks associated with prolonged hospital stays, and often results in people requiring less long-term care than originally anticipated.

“Home First has strengthened collaboration between acute, community, social care and voluntary sector partners, creating a more seamless discharge process. This has helped reduce delays, improve patient flow, make better use of hospital capacity, and ensure resources are focused where they have the greatest impact.”

Helen is Head of Nursing for the Integrated Discharge Team at Luton.

Speaking about the Home First scheme, she said: “Patients will be able to safely leave hospital more quickly than they are at present, with an assessment of their needs being carried out in their own homes. Home is a more suitable environment than a hospital for this type of assessment as everyone have their own ways of managing at home that are different when in hospital.

“Home First is an excellent example of multi-disciplinary team working, bringing together social care, community and acute health care, therapy, care providers and commissioners to work together to improve patient outcomes and provide clear pathways for patient's out of hospital.”

Earlier this year, a new way of discharging patients was piloted from Bedford Hospital.

The Home First scheme identifies patients who need to leave hospital with new care or increased carer support. A universal offer of four care calls a day will be delivered by a home care provider in the first 72 hours or for up to one week after discharge, depending on the patient’s local authority, in order for the patient to get safely home.

Today, the scheme will be extended to Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire patients, whilst Luton Borough Council will be launching their Home First Recover to Reable scheme.

Dr Tammy Angel, Chief Clinical Transformation Officer, said: “This is an excellent initiative that aims to get patients home as soon as they are medically stable to leave hospital. It also ensures that more people have the opportunity to get home over a weekend and reduces avoidable hospital related harm associated with prolonged hospital stays.

“We are proud of the collaborative work that we have been doing with system partners and care providers, and this scheme continues our commitment to improving outcomes for both patients and services.”

For more information on the scheme, please visit the Home First website page: www.bedfordshirehospitals.nhs.uk/our-services/discharge/home-first-scheme

Ancy, Independence Support Worker within the Complex Medicine Therapy Team at the L&D, is our latest Improvement of the Month winner.

After recognising that boredom during hospital stays can negatively affect patients' wellbeing and mood, Ancy took the initiative to improve their experience. Working with the Improvement Team, she launched a project to provide patients on elderly care wards with access to free daily newspapers and other wellbeing activities.

Ancy collected data before and after introducing activity packs, crosswords, books and group activities. The results have shown a significant and consistent improvement in patient wellbeing and overall experience.

To close , Pritesh, Chief Pharmacist, thanks all of the Pharmacy staff at our hospitals.

“This week has been a wonderful opportunity for our entire Pharmacy family to come together, celebrate our shared achievements, and reflect on the difference we make every day in patient care and safety.

“Behind every patient journey is a dedicated team of Pharmacy professionals, often behind the scenes, ensuring safe and effective use of medicines, whose contributions are not always visible, but are essential to delivering outstanding care. On we celebrated the expertise, commitment, and compassion of our Pharmacy Technicians and the diverse range of roles they fulfil.

“The week has also been filled with fun, teamwork, and appreciation. We have taken time to recognise and thank each person for their unique skills, dedication, and support, to remind us that our greatest strength is our teamwork and appreciation for each other.

Meet Naomi, Principal Pharmacist for Education and Training.

“I was drawn to Pharmacy as it lets me combine my love of science with helping people. Throughout my career I have worked in both primary and secondary care, and seen the impact that Pharmacists can have on the health and wellbeing of patients and the public, alongside supporting tackling health inequalities.

“I find supporting the training of Pharmacy colleagues and other healthcare professionals incredibly rewarding. By delivering training we are able to support them to prescribe safely and effectively for all our patients.

“I am also privileged to be able to support school, college and university students through work experience placements and career highlight sessions which are a wonderful way to encourage young people to consider Pharmacy as a future career.

“ provides us with the opportunity to show the impact that Pharmacists make, and the impact that we as a profession can have on our patients’ wellbeing and safety.”
