Sad day as a landmark is removed from the station. Sharp eyed residents will see a crane in place today and our drill tower slowly disappearing from the skyline (not Skye the Frenchie thankfully). Unfortunately the tower has been deemed to have reached the end of its life and will not be replaced. Generations of Longtown Firefighters have been up the tower (and probably a few residents, who are we kidding) and there was once a siren at the top to alert the crew to fire-shouts. It will be missed.
To answer some of the questions. The tower removal is the result of a comprehensive review of Tower provision across the County with £1.4m being awarded from Government to fund repair and replacement at other locations we can use. Options to facilitate ladder training at Longtown going forward are being implemented with metal ladder bars fixed to the station building. So keep an eye out for more work in the future. TY.
