Climate Resilient Gardening

Some very healthy conversations are going on about climate resilience at Wivenhoe Town Council, as part of a widening brief under the Environment Committee. This is, I hope, the first of a few articles on the subject.

Last week, I went around and chatted to some residents who are already taking steps for climate resilient gardening and I also met Julia at Beth Chatto's who pioneered the idea of dry gardens locally.

Below is a video with highlights of the conversations I had, which I hope provide hints and/or food for thought. It is just over 15 minutes long.

Many thanks to all who participated in this: Jan, Liz, Julia; Laurie, Janie and Fran and to David, whose wife lamented the difficulty of maintaining a lawn in this locality and volunteered him for a chat...

Here is also a link to some of the other projects that Beth Chatto's have undertaken locally for your further interest.

Help Shape the Future of Bus Travel
Whether you travel by bus regularly, occasionally or not at all, the Colchester Bus Growth Partnership wants to hear your views. A new city-wide survey is gathering feedback from residents to better understand how people travel, what works well and what could be improved.

Tell us:
• What's working well?
• What could be better?
• What would make bus travel a more attractive option for you?

Your responses will help inform future improvements and encourage more people to consider travelling by bus.
Got ideas to improve bus travel?

Mayor's Update- October 2026

October has been another busy month.

On October 3rd, WTC staff, councillors, residents and I gathered at the KGV doggy park to formally open the bench in memory of our esteemed colleague Jim Young, who was devoted to his work for the Wivenhoe Estate for over 25 years.

On October 4th, I attended the West Mersea Civic Service lead by Mayor Bob Jenkins with my envoy Mark Norrington, the theme of which was “Respect”.

Sunday October 19th marked the Wivenhoe Civic Service and reception, the theme of which was “Community and Inclusion”. The service was well attended, and the choir of Millfields School, who sung “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing” conducted by Headmistress Natasha Bennett, was very well received. I am very grateful to the Reverend Canon Erwin Lammens and Church Warden Mary Jacob for their guidance, to Deputy Mayor Fiona Harmon for her self-penned reading, and, last but no means least, to all the WTF staff for their support throughout, in particular to Mandy Smart for all her efforts and painstaking work.

Please be mindful of others when using the High Street car park and only use the designated parking spaces.

Michael wasn't able to lock up the toilets last night and of course they were also inaccessible to potential users.

WTC Civic Service 2026

What a wonderful day it was at the Civic Service, conducted by The Reverend Canon Erwin Lammens at St Mary’s Church yesterday! The theme of the service was community and inclusion and this was reflected in the prayers, hymns and readings. The highlight of the service was for many in the congregation was the performance of “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing”, beautifully sung and acted by members of Millfields Primary School choir, led by the headmistress Mrs Natasha Bennett. They received a huge round of applause from the congregation.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to the service in any way, and to all those who attended.
