⚽ A POSITIVE WEEKEND FOR STOCKBROOK UNITED! 🔵⚪️⚫️

Two hard-fought draws for the Stocky this weekend, with both sides showing determination, character and plenty of fight! 💪

Our Saturday side battled to a 1-1 draw against Mayfield FC, with Kizza producing a moment of real quality with a fantastic touch, turn and finish to put us ahead. After coming under plenty of pressure in the second half, the lads dug deep and earned a valuable point.

Meanwhile, Stockbrook United Sundays also finished 1-1 against Ockbrook Athletic in a competitive encounter. Plenty of talking points, chances at both ends and a point that keeps us TOP OF THE PREMIER LEAGUE! 👏

🌟 Man of the Match

- Saturday:
- Sunday: Ben Wilmott

Two points gained, lessons learned and plenty to build on. That's grassroots football — highs, lows and everything in between!

A special mention to Ockbrook Athletic for their sportsmanship and the way they are run. Always a pleasure competing against good people.

🏆 LOOKING AHEAD

The Saturday lads have a massive cup test next weekend, travelling to face Heanor Town Reserves, who sit at the top of the Central Midlands table.

The Sunday side take on Eaton Angels as they look to continue their push at the top of the league.

Two teams, two big challenges and one united badge!

Let's keep pushing, keep believing and keep making our mark in our first season.

A massive thank you to our sponsors Jaxx Derby and everyone supporting the club.

🌳🏡 STOCKBROOK PAST & PRESENT

BEFORE THE HOUSES, THERE WAS AN ESTATE…

The Lost History of the Firs Estate, Derby

Have you ever wondered what our neighbourhood looked like before the houses, streets, schools and parks we know today?

Long before the familiar streets of our area were built, much of the land around Burton Road, Abbey Street and the surrounding neighbourhood formed part of a large private estate known as The Firs Estate.

And its history is fascinating!

🏡 THE FIRs – A REGENCY MANSION

At the heart of the estate stood The Firs, a substantial Regency villa at what is now 320 Burton Road.

The house was associated with the Abney family, particularly Reverend Canon Edward Abney.

His son, Sir William de Wiveleslie Abney, was born at The Firs in 1843 and went on to become a distinguished photographer, scientist and pioneer of photographic chemistry.

🏗️ THE ARRIVAL OF HOUSING

In 1877, the Derby Land Building and Investment Company was formed, and the estate became part of a major period of land development.

A report in the Derby Mercury in May 1878 described the Firs Estate as approximately 36 acres, including its mansion.

Fields and open land gradually gave way to the streets and homes that would become part of our community.

🏫 1887 – FIRs ESTATE SCHOOL

A school was built to serve the growing population.

Before the permanent school opened, lessons reportedly took place in a temporary wooden building at the corner of Dean Street and Harrison Street.

The permanent Firs Estate School opened in 1887 and remains an important part of our local heritage.

🥕 THE ALLOTMENTS

The Firs Estate Allotments are another surviving link to this history.

Originally agricultural land, they became allotment gardens where local families could grow vegetables and keep animals.

Historic maps from 1901 and 1947 show just how important these gardens became to the neighbourhood.

🌳 RYKNELD RECREATION GROUND

In 1913, approximately 11 acres retained by Sir William Abney were reportedly sold to Derby Corporation.

Rykneld Recreation Ground is recorded as opening in 1923, providing a green space for generations of local residents.

There is also an intriguing mystery surrounding a possible historic pond or water feature in the wider Rykneld area. We haven't yet established its exact location, but it's something we're investigating!

📜 A NEIGHBOURHOOD WITH A STORY TO TELL

From a Regency mansion and private farmland to Victorian housing, schools, allotments and public recreation, the Firs Estate played a significant part in shaping our corner of Derby.

And much of that history is still around us if we know where to look.

💙❤️ WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Did your parents or grandparents live around the Firs Estate?

Did you attend Firs Estate School or Rykneld School?

Do you remember Rykneld Rec before its more recent changes?

And does anyone remember a pond or water feature in or around the recreation ground?

Perhaps you have an old photograph, a family story or a memory that could help us piece together another part of our local history.

Please share your memories and photographs in the comments.

Because our local history isn't just about buildings and dates. It's about the people who lived here, worked here, grew up here and made this neighbourhood what it is today.

❤️🍻 THE BEDDY — A SAD DAY FOR OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY 🍻❤️

Some sad news for everyone who knows and loves The Bedford Arms.

The landlord has announced that, a couple of weeks ago, they received a call informing them that Marston’s are selling the pub, along with several others, because it no longer fits in with their future plans for the grandstands and surrounding area.

Understandably, this is upsetting news, especially after everything that has been done to bring The Beddy back as a proper community pub and keep its doors open. ❤️

The good news for now is that THE BEDDY IS STILL OPEN AS NORMAL! 🍻

It’s unlikely that anything will happen before Christmas, so there should be no immediate changes. The landlord has promised to keep everyone informed as soon as there is any further news.

A massive thank you has also been extended to everyone who has supported the pub, with the landlord saying it will be an absolute honour to have been the last-ever landlord behind the bar at The Beddy. ❤️

Here at Stockbrook Past & Present, we know just how important our local pubs are. They are more than just buildings with a bar; they are places where friendships are made, memories are created, and communities come together.

Whatever the future holds for The BedfordArms, let's hope its story isn't over just yet. 🤞❤️

💬 What memories do you have of The Bedford Arms? Have you spent time there over the years, met friends there, or got a favourite story to share? We'd love to hear from you in the comments.

❤️

🏡 OUR AREA: THE STORY OF LOUVAIN ROAD, DERBY 📜

From open countryside to a residential street — uncovering the story behind Louvain Road.

Have you ever wondered how Louvain Road came to be, and what the area looked like before the houses we know today were built?

To understand the street, we need to look back at Derby’s growth and the dramatic changes that transformed the city during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

🌾 BEFORE THE HOUSES

For centuries, much of the land on Derby’s outskirts consisted of open countryside, agricultural fields and scattered properties.

During the nineteenth century, Derby grew rapidly through industry, engineering and railway development. As the town expanded, surrounding land increasingly became available for new housing.

The growth of local employment and transport links helped create demand for residential streets beyond the older, more densely populated parts of the town.

🚋 A NEW ERA OF SUBURBAN LIVING

The early twentieth century brought significant changes to Derby.

Improved transport links made travelling into the town easier, while industrial expansion created opportunities for families seeking homes close to their workplaces.

During the 1920s and 1930s, residential development transformed many parts of Derby's outskirts. New roads and houses reflected a wider British trend towards suburban living, with families looking for more space, gardens and a different style of home.

Louvain Road forms part of this wider story of Derby’s changing residential landscape, although the precise date when the road was laid out and its earliest houses constructed still needs to be established through historical records.

🇧🇪 WHY IS IT CALLED LOUVAIN ROAD?

The name Louvain raises an interesting historical question.

Louvain, now more commonly known by its Flemish name Leuven, is a Belgian university city.

In August 1914, during the First World War, German troops devastated parts of the city, including its celebrated university library. The destruction caused widespread outrage in Britain and across the world.

Could Louvain Road have been named in connection with these events?

During and after the First World War, Belgian place names carried powerful associations with the conflict. It is therefore an intriguing possibility that the name reflects the atmosphere of the period.

However, until a contemporary street-naming record is found, the precise reason for the name remains unconfirmed.

🏘️ A STREET WITH A WIDER STORY

Louvain Road is part of the much bigger story of Derby’s expansion, as open land gradually gave way to residential development.

The homes and streets that emerged during this period reflect changing lifestyles, growing industry and the aspirations of families who made Derby their home.

Today, Louvain Road is part of the everyday landscape, but its history connects it to a period of enormous change in British society.

🔎 NOW WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Do you live on Louvain Road, or have family connections to the street?

📸 Do you have any old photographs of the road or its houses?

🏡 Do you know when the first homes were built?

📖 Have you heard a story about how Louvain Road got its name?

We would love to hear your memories, photographs and recollections. Sometimes the most valuable pieces of local history are held in family albums and the memories of people who have lived in an area for generations.

How lovely to receive this....

💙❤️ STOCKBROOK — MEMORIES THAT LAST A LIFETIME ❤️💙

A lovely message from Alan Woodward, who was born in Parliament Street on 14th June 1964 and also lived in Westbury Street before moving to Burton upon Trent in 1975.

Alan attended Firs Estate Infants and Junior School during the 1970s, and recently returned to the Stockbrook and Rykneld Street area to revisit the places that played such an important part in his childhood.

One memory stood out in particular — standing once again on Rykneld Recreation Ground, on the very football pitch where he played for Firs Estate Juniors over 50 years ago! ⚽💙

Alan remembers playing there as a youngster, with the old changing rooms where the team got ready now being a nursery school. 🏫

It's amazing how a place can bring so many memories flooding back, even after all these years. The streets, the school, the rec and the people all form part of the story of our area.

Thank you, Alan, for sharing your memories with us and for supporting the Stockbrook People's Page.

Our streets may change, generations may come and go, but the memories we make here stay with us forever. 🕰️❤️

And Alan, if you're reading this, we'd love to hear more about your memories of Parliament Street, Westbury Street, Firs Estate School and those footballing days at Rykneld Rec!

🔵❤️ Stockbrook — yesterday, today and always. 💙

🔵⚪️⚫️🔥 STOCKBROOK UNITED — WEEKEND ROUND-UP! 🔥🔵⚪️⚫️

⚽ SATURDAY — A TOUGH LESSON

Stockbrook United 4–5 Hemington Hammers

Football can be a cruel game sometimes! 😤

We found ourselves 2–0 up, then 4–2 ahead with just 10 minutes remaining, only to see the points slip away in the closing stages.

There's no hiding from it — those final moments weren't good enough, and we'll hold our hands up. But this is our first season, and learning how to see games out is part of the journey.

We'll take the lessons, get back to training and work hard to put things right. 💪

⚽ SUNDAY — WHAT A RESPONSE!

Chellaston Firsts 1–5 Stockbrook United Sundays

Now THAT is how you respond! 🔥👏

The lads bounced back in style with a brilliant five-goal performance and a superb all-round team display.

⚽ Labby x2 — including an absolute WORLDIE of a header from a peach of a cross by skipper JP! 🎯

⚽ Kizza — a spectacular scissor kick! Take a bow, son! 🔥

⚽ Boggy — an absolute ROCKET into the roof of the net! 🚀

⚽ Keane — a calm finish to cap off some brilliant play from Ethan Lowe. 👌

A fantastic response, quality goals and a team performance to be proud of. 💙

💙 THE BIGGER PICTURE

One defeat that hurts. One brilliant response. Two games that remind us what football is all about.

We're building something here at Stockbrook United. There will be highs, lows, lessons and plenty of hard work along the way — but we'll face it together.

We're proud to represent our area, proud to wear the badge and determined to keep moving forward.

Next up for the Sundays: Ockbrook Athletic — bring it on! 💪🔥

A massive thank you to our sponsors Jaxx Derby and to everyone supporting Stockbrook United and the Stockbrook People's Page. Your support means everything.
