On Saturday afternoon in ranger Lewis rescued a grey phalarope from the car park. It had got lost in the stormy weather, after a short recovery in warm cardboard box it was released by one of the ponds, it flew off looking fit and well. They breed in the high arctic and winter off the west coast of South Africa. A new species for Samphire Hoe.

As the sun sets and shadows stretch across the cliffs, join us for a gently spooky evening walk filled with ghostly tales and mysterious encounters…

Led by Ranger Paul, this family-friendly walk will take you around Samphire Hoe as he shares eerie stories. Some rooted in local legend, others conjured from the imagination!

Keep your eyes peeled… You might just spot the ghost with the huge white hands, hear whispers from the Tommyknockers of the old coal mine, or cross paths with ghostly smugglers and the officers who tried to stop them, nothing too scary, just enough to make you jump and giggle!

Please bring torches. Wear sturdy footwear and warm clothes.

Spot the juvenile adder! 🐍🔍

Ranger Lewis discovered this juvenile adder expertly hiding amongst the foliage. It was only around 16cm!

Unlike grass snakes, adders do not lay eggs, giving birth to live young that are independent from day one.

Many are born during August and September, with juveniles surviving entirely on leftover yolk sac and fat reserves during their first weeks.
