MEMORY MONDAY – All Aboard, Dumfries! 💚

This week, we are taking a trip back in time to Dumfries Railway Station!

From the days of steam trains to family holidays, school trips and emotional goodbyes on the platform, our railway station has seen generations of Doonhamers come and go.

But we want to hear YOUR stories!

🚂 Can you remember travelling from Dumfries when steam trains were still running?
🎒 Where did your first train journey take you?
📸 Do you have any old photographs of the station tucked away?

And here's the big question...

If you could bring back ONE old railway route from Dumfries, where would you want it to take you?

Share your memories in the comments below. Let's see how far back we can go!

WHAT HAVE WE BEEN UP TO THIS WEEK?

It's been another wonderful week of getting out and about, meeting fantastic people and seeing some of the amazing community spirit that makes Dumfries so special! 💚

Pumpkin Carving at A Patch Ae Land

We headed along to A Patch Ae Land in Sandside, where we rolled up our sleeves and got stuck into some pumpkin carving alongside the children and the wonderful team who look after this fantastic community space!

There were plenty of smiles, creativity and laughter, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves!

Looking for something to do tonight? Why not pop along to their Halloween Party at A Patch Ae Land Community Gardens, running from 6pm – 8pm!

Wednesday – A Community Stitched Together

On Wednesday, we had the pleasure of meeting some of the wonderful people who have been involved in creating the beautiful poppy drapes displayed at the Remembrance Garden on Brooms Road and throughout Dumfries Town Centre.

Our Chair and Secretariat even got involved in one of the sewing sessions and were pleasantly surprised by their hidden sewing talents! 🪡

It was truly heart warming to see so many members of the community coming together, dedicating their time and skills to creating something so meaningful for the whole of Dumfries.

💚 A little appreciation goes a long way!

Weeks like this remind us just how lucky we are to have such passionate, creative and dedicated communities across Dumfries and Galloway.

From bringing people together through fun activities to creating beautiful tributes that hold such significance, the work happening within our communities really is something to be proud of.

A massive thank you to everyone who welcomed us along this week. Keep doing what you're doing – you are what makes Dumfries shine!

It is with great sadness that we have learned of the tragic passing of Richard Baines, long-serving curator of Logan Botanic Garden, who sadly lost his life after being struck by a falling tree near his home in Castle Douglas during Storm Boleo.

Back in August, we had the pleasure of welcoming Richard to A Patch Ae Land, where he delivered a wonderful presentation on "How to Create a Wonderful Display in Our Garden Planter" as part of Dumfries Town Board's Dumfries Bloom & Shine initiative.

Richard was an absolute joy to listen to and learn from. His passion, knowledge and enthusiasm were infectious, and what made the occasion even more special was his genuine interest in the work being done across Dumfries to bring communities together and make our town a more beautiful and welcoming place.

We feel incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with Richard and share in his knowledge and passion. His contribution to horticulture and to the wider Dumfries and Galloway community was truly remarkable, and he will be deeply missed.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to Richard's family, friends, colleagues and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

🌳 MEMORY MONDAY – Do You Remember Dock Park?

This week, we're taking a trip down memory lane to one of Dumfries' much-loved green spaces – Dock Park!

From childhood adventures in the play park and family picnics to feeding the ducks, enjoying an ice cream or simply taking a stroll along the River Nith, Dock Park has been part of so many Doonhamers' lives over the years.

But how much has it changed since you were wee?

💭 We want to know...

What are your fondest memories of Dock Park? Do you remember what the park looked like years ago? Perhaps you have an old family photograph taken there?

WHAT HAVE WE BEEN UP TO TODAY?

Today, the Dumfries Town Board team headed along to Bouldover Climbing Centre, based on Irish Street in Dumfries, where we were joined by the fantastic young people from Summerhill Community Centre!

A total of 13 young people aged 11–20 came along to take part in a one-hour climbing session, giving them the opportunity to try something new in a safe, fun and supportive environment.

But what was it all about?

This initiative is about much more than just climbing! It's about providing young people with positive activities and opportunities to socialise, build confidence, develop new skills and channel their energy into something fun and rewarding.

It also gives young people who may not otherwise have access to activities like climbing the chance to get involved, try something different and discover what's available right here in Dumfries!

It was an amazing turnout, with everyone leaving with tired faces, big smiles and plenty of positive comments!

A huge thank you to Bouldover Climbing Centre and Summerhill Community Centre for helping make today such a success!

Creating opportunities, building confidence and supporting our young people!
