Today, 11 September 2026, UK fire and rescue services joined together to remember the 343 firefighters and all those who lost their lives, in the devastating 9/11 attacks in New York 25 years ago.

At 1.46pm ESFRS staff observed a one-minute silence, as a mark of respect to all those affected and to reflect on the courage, commitment and selflessness demonstrated by firefighters on that day, honouring the legacy of those who did not return home.

Today, 9 September, marks Emergency Services Day, , a national day of recognition for the extraordinary people who serve and support our emergency services.

At 9am today, colleagues across East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service paused to observe a two-minute silence in memory of those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. At our Joint Headquarters, fire and Sussex Police colleagues stood together to reflect and pay their respects.

We would like to thank all our firefighters, staff and volunteers, as well as our partners across the emergency services, for their dedication, professionalism and commitment to keeping our communities safe.

Emergency Services Day

On 20 July, we attended a wildfire in Abbots Wood, Arlington. A fire investigation was completed and it is believed the fire spread from books that had been deliberately set alight.

This incident highlighted how fires can have serious and often unintended consequences, spreading rapidly, putting lives, property and the wider community at risk.

As families prepare for exam results, it can be a good opportunity to have conversations with young people about making safe and responsible choices, including understanding the serious risks that fire can pose.
Our firewise scheme can help young people understand the dangers of fire and how to stay safe. We work closely with families and professionals to ensure each young person receives the most appropriate support.
đź”— Head to: www.esfrs.org/firewise to find out more.

Together, we can reduce risk and help keep our communities safe.

If you have any information about deliberate firesetting or suspicious behaviour you can also contact CrimeStoppers (100% anonymously) by calling 0800 555 111 or contact Sussex Police on 101 with information. Always call 999 in an emergency.
