Thank you to those who popped along to see us at the station this week with their electric blankets, we're happy to say most people left with a fully working & safe blanket!

Unfortunately we did have to cut the plugs off of 20 blankets that were either over 10 years old or faulty. This is why it is so important to have them checked.

Some important advice on the use of electric blankets & heat pads:

❗️Always inspect the blanket or heat pad for damage before use

❗️Switch it off before falling asleep unless it has a special all-night thermostat

❗️Never use them with additional heat sources such as hot water bottles

❗️Replace them every 10 years

❗️Never use them if they are damp or wet

❗️Always buy new & not secondhand

❗️Do not fold or crease them - this damages the internal wires

❗️Avoid the use of flammable emollients whilst using electric blankets & heat pads

❗️Never use them near open fire

❗️Always check for standard safety marks like BEAB, CE & UKCA

If in doubt - throw it out!

While emollients themselves are not directly flammable, they can significantly increase the flammability of fabrics such as clothing, bedding, or bandages.

Anyone regularly using emollients should keep away from naked flames and other potential ignition sources, including smoking. Don't wear clothes contaminated with emollients when cooking.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind for parts of West Sussex on Friday with the arrival of Storm Austen.

The storm will bring a spell of strong winds with transport disruption likely and possible damaging winds in some areas.

To help keep yourselves safe, the Met Office advises that you prepare to protect your property and people from injury. You can do this by checking for loose items outside your home and plan how you could secure them. Items to check include bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds, and fences.

If you are on the coast, stay safe during stormy weather by being aware of large waves. Even from the shore large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea.

The first 20 minutes after a burn or scald are important. Knowing the right first aid can help limit the severity of the injury.

Remember: Cool, Call, Cover

💧COOL the burn under cool running water for 20 minutes
📞 CALL 999 for serious burns or seek medical advice
🩹 COVER the burn loosely with cling film

Share this advice so more people know what to do when a burn happens.

It’s that time of year as the weather gets colder to fire up the log burner or open fire to stay nice and toasty!

Make sure you stay safe by following this simple advice:

• Have your chimney or flue swept and inspected regularly. At least once a year at the beginning of the season. Twice yearly if you use it daily.

• Never keep logs or other combustible materials around or near the stove or fire.

• Always use a fire guard with open fires and ensure the hearth is clear of rugs or other combustibles.

•Ensure you only burn clean, dry logs. Avoid wet firewood or any treated timbers as these can cause more buildup of creosote and combustibles, leading to chimney fires.

• Ensure the fire is left in a safe state when going to bed.

🔥 If you have a chimney fire, you’ll often hear a roaring sound as the burning fuels in the chimney draw air through the fireplace. You’ll also possibly see sparks and flames coming from the top of the chimney. If you suspect you have a chimney fire, CALL 999 immediately! 🚒

343

Today, firehouses across America will remember a number that forever carries tremendous weight in the fire service.

25 years ago on September 11th 2001, 343 members of the FDNY made the ultimate sacrifice.

They climbed stairwells while thousands were coming down, they carried equipment toward a danger from which everyone else was trying to escape.

Today, we remember their sacrifice.

Today, we remember 343.

Today, we remember all who sadly lost their lives that day 🕊

🔥 TOILET ROLL FIRE TREND — DON’T TRY IT AT HOME 🧻🔥

What might look like a bit of harmless fun online is still playing with real fire. A small flame can quickly become an uncontrolled fire, putting your home, your family and others at serious risk.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Parents & carers: please talk to your children and young people about this trend and the dangers of copying fire-related videos online.

Don’t let a TikTok trend turn into a real house fire.
It’s not worth the risk. 🚒
