A booming Erewash athletics club has been named the best in the East Midlands for how volunteers help to boost the community – as it continues to celebrate Great Britain hurdler Jessica Turner becoming its first member to go to the Olympics.

Amber Valley and Erewash Athletics Club – based at Ilkeston’s Rutland Sports Park – is where the 2021 Tokyo Games semi-finalist honed her prowess over 400 metres. It was voted Club of the Year as England Athletics held an awards ceremony to salute the efforts of those across the region who give up time to help train young people and boost the general fitness of residents.

The club also won the Unsung Project of the Year award for its regular Dementia Friends and Wellbeing Walks at Rutland Sports Park. A third gong – Unsung Hero – went to its treasurer and coach Dan Humphrey.

Wall to wall TV coverage of fair . . and Donald mural

The start of the Ilkeston Charter Fair was this year covered by news teams from both the BBC and ITV as fans of thrill rides and hook-a-duck got to marvel at a newly-unveiled extra attraction – a huge artwork on the side of the town hall.

The acclaimed mural depicts local WW2 hero Donald Rose, who was the UK’s oldest man when he died last year aged 110.

The five-day fair got under way at 6pm on Wednesday – and ITV Central News broadcast live from Ilkeston during its evening bulletin.

Earlier, the BBC’s East Midlands Today asked passers-by what they thought of the eye-popping artwork. Online comments have included “absolutely beautiful”, “phenomenal” and “stunning”.

We will be live streaming the official opening ceremony from this page at around 11.45am.

It's almost time for Ilkeston Charter Fair, and it's a good idea to have a conversation with your child about...

🎠Peer pressure - you never have to drink or take drugs just because your friends are doing it or they ask you to do it.

🎠No is a complete sentence. If you don't want to go on a ride you don't have justify your reason.

🎠Look after your friends, if they are struggling, frightened or unwell, don't leave them on their own. Find help.

🎠Trust your instincts - if something doesn't feel right, leave, stay with your friends and get help.

🎠and finally, remind them that you will always pick up the phone if they need you. There is no shame in asking for support if they’re unsure.

We want the fair to be a safe environment for everyone attending. Help keep your community safe by sharing this advice with your children.
