🔤Royal Liver Building A-Z 🔤
To tell you all about the building and its surrounding areas from A to Z!
This week we are Under Construction! 🏗️
The Royal Liver Building was built between May 1908 and July 1911, that's just over three years for this grand 322ft tall building! That's an extremely fast turn around for what was technically the UK's first skscraper.
Of course, as we talked about a few weeks ago, that is because the building was built using the Hennebique Principle, which is reinforced concrete and steel, a much faster method of contruction than just going brick by brick!
But it all starts with the foundations, because we are built on recalimed land, we needed giant concrete piers to be sunk 40 ft below the surface of what would have been the docks, spanning over an area of 52,000 square ft. This is to ensure it supports all 5 million cubic ft of the building!
As we go start to build up, each floor of the Royal Liver Building only took around 19 days to construct as they used electric vertical hoists to lift all building materials from the basement to each floor. This coupled with all the men on site and narrow gauge railway meant it was an extremely fast build!
