Is Your Vision Roadworthy?

As British Summer Time ends, and the nights begin to draw in, more people find themselves driving after dark.

This is a time when motorists may begin to notice problems with their eyesight as low light levels enlarge the pupil and accentuate any focusing errors – no matter how minor – causing blur.

Trouble focusing or being dazzled by glare from street lighting or oncoming headlights when driving at night can indicate that your vision is falling below the minimum eyesight standards.

Ten tips to help you keep a clear and comfortable view of the road ahead:

■ Regularly test your vision by reading a car number plate from 20 metres away 🚗

■ Have routine sight tests – once every two years or sooner if you notice a change in your vision.

■ If you’ve been prescribed eyewear for driving, wear it! Don’t be tempted to make short trips without your glasses or swap them for a pair of non-prescription sunglasses 👓

■ Wear glasses or contact lenses with an up-to-date prescription.

■ Clean your spectacles and ensure they are scratch-free. Smudges or scratches can cause excessive glare or visual discomfort from low autumn sun 🌇

■ Keep a spare pair of glasses in the car, if possible.

■ Check any glasses you wear for driving have an anti-reflection coating or lenses specially designed for driving. NEVER wear tinted spectacle lenses or sunglasses to drive at night 🌙

■ Keep your windscreen clean inside and out and check your wiper blades for wear.

■ Check your car’s lights are working properly ❗

■ If you’re affected by oncoming headlights, try concentrating on the nearside kerb as you drive – but remember to slow down.

Your "Login with Google" button could be a trap.

OAuth phishing (aka "consent phishing") is surging — and it doesn't need your password.

Attackers create a malicious app, then trick you into clicking "Allow" on an OAuth consent screen.
You grant real permissions (read email, access files, manage contacts) to a fake app — no password stolen, no MFA to bypass.
Just your click.

Red flags to watch for:
• Unfamiliar app names asking for broad permissions ("Full account access")
•Urgency "Your document was shared — sign in now!
• Consent screens with typos, generic branding, or mismatched domains
• Apps requesting far more access than their function needs

How to defend yourself:
✅ Read the permissions scope before clicking "Allow" — every time
✅ Regularly audit connected apps (Google/Microsoft "Third-party access" settings) and revoke anything unused or unrecognized
✅ Verify the app publisher/domain before granting access
✅ Enable admin consent workflows if you manage a workspace
✅ Treat OAuth prompts with the same suspicion as a password login page

For organisations:
Restrict third-party app installs to admin-approved apps only
Monitor for anomalous OAuth grants in your SIEM
Educate teams — this bypasses MFA entirely

Passwords aren't the only thing worth protecting. Your consent is a credential too.

🎧 International Control Room Week

With the skills to rapidly gather information, assess risk and co-ordinate officers and staff from every corner Dyfed-Powys, our incident handlers (dispatchers) are the voice on the other side of the radio 24hours a day.

Osian joined the dispatching team two years ago. He’s answered 999s, operated the Digi Desk and is now dispatching officers to help you in your time of need.

He described a day on the air as “‘unique and fast paced.”

Priorities for incident handlers can shift in seconds as they respond to an emergency call, deploying officers to a road traffic collision one minute and then an ongoing burglary the next.

Explaining how they get officers to people in danger, Osian said:

“We risk assess as the incident as it's unfolding, paying attention to every detail shared over the air. The information we gather as dispatchers is vital to officers on the ground dealing with the calls"
"Knowing you have been able to make sure the public get the help they need whilst keeping officers safe is rewarding."

Thank you to all our incident handlers for keeping the public and officers of Dyfed-Powys safe.

Thank you for sharing our appeal.

🎧 International Control Room Week

Our FCC recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, and in this time have advanced to be an incredible omnicompetent team.

As digital contact modernised the way people can contact the police, our communication centre is also home to the digital desk; the virtual link between the police and community.
For our control room staff, a day on the ‘digi’ desk is as varied as every other role.

Managing and triaging online reports to the police, they apply their skills and training to risk assess and gather the vital information they need all behind the keyboard.

In the last year alone, the team have:
🖱️Received 25,300 online reports
📲Had over15,000 conversations with people online.

No matter the time of day, or day of the week, there are multiple ways you can contact us:

🗣️Have you ever wondered what the role of an operator looks like?

From 999 calls and non-emergency, to general everyday queries, our contact handlers never know what the next conversation will be.

Trained to gather information, stay calm under pressure and identify the risks that shape the officer’s response to the communities call for help.

We spoke with Ellie, one of the many skilled contact operators to find out what life is like behind the headset.

Always knowing she wanted to join the police, Ellie joined the team over two years ago after attending one of the Force Communication Centre recruitment events.

When asked what she loved about the job Ellie shared:

“No day is the same. You never know what your day will look like.”

Describing what it’s like to pick up the 999 call she said:

“You are instantly focussed. Every 999 call is likely an emergency. My priority will always be remaining as calm and possible. The caller may be in an immense amount of distress, it’s my job to help them whilst getting all the vital information we need.”

When going home, Ellie shared how she leaves with a sense of pride:

“Being the first person that someone will speak to in what could be the worst moments of their life, is so rewarding knowing you have played a part in helping someone.”
