A call late in the afternoon. A teenager arrived in the UK 2 days ago, speaking maybe only 30 words and needs somewhere to sleep, tonight. You have an hour to say yes or no. Carers often tell us they wish they knew how fostering an unaccompanied asylum-seeking child usually begins.

You don’t need to be a particular sort of person to foster unaccompanied asylum-seeking children. You need to be 21, have a spare bedroom and have the patience to be the steady, reliable adult that these young people need.

Send us a message if you have questions about fostering.

Resilience is not ‘taking a knock’ without flinching and is not something you have or don’t. No, it is:

knowing which adult to tell when something has gone wrong
being able to put a rough name to a feeling
having a body that comes back down after a fright
having something they know they are good at
a working belief that effort sometimes changes the outcome
So, how do our foster carers help to build that resilience?

Naming feelings
Settling the body
Noticing what went right
Giving chances to be good at something
It is normal when first thinking about fostering, to think you could not do this. Our fostering agency will ensure you are not alone in this. Nobody gets it right all the time, so have faith that you will have a whole team of people to help you work out what to do, what to try, what not to say. Give us a call if you are ready to become a foster carer.

There is a shortfall of around 6,000 foster carers in the UK. There are hundreds of fostering agencies in the UK, all of whom need to work together to meet this shortfall.

Children benefit when we collectively attract more brilliant people into fostering, support them well and enable them to continue fostering.

If you are interested in becoming a foster carer, send us a message for more information about the process.

Fostering isn’t about grand gestures. Sometimes, the smallest acts can make the biggest difference. The routine, the stability, the dinner on the table. The small, everyday acts that make a child feel safe, welcome and valued.

What makes a good foster carer? Someone who shows kindness, patience and willing. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have your own children, are a bad cook, or don’t get it right, first time.

Please think for a moment. You already have what it takes. Just share it.

One common issue foster carers often encounter with children in care, centres around mealtimes – refusing to eat, repeatedly asking when the next meal will be, hiding snacks. Those first few months around the dinner table are about reassuring children that there will be a next meal time, there will be food readily available and they will not be punished for not eating.

New carers often worry about not being a good cook; this is not important. What is important is food being offered calmly and taken away without comment when refused.

The battles at mealtime don’t get worked out alone at a kitchen table at 7 in the evening. They get sorted with support from the team – the carer’s social worker, peer support from other carers and formal training around food and health.

Things teenagers in care need from their foster carers? A supporter. An advocate. Someone to listen to them. Acceptance. Boundaries. Empathy. Love.

Last year, there were more than 81,000 children in care – more than a quarter were aged 16 and over.
