Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) The official page for the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA). Our main role is to protect and improve the environment.

SEPA is Scotland’s environmental regulator and is responsible for protecting and improving Scotland's unique and beautiful environment. Our work makes Scotland a greener place to live and creates a sustainable legacy for future generations. We do this by being an excellent environmental regulator, helping business and industry to understand their environmental responsibilities, enabling customers to comply with legislation and good practice and to realise the many economic benefits of good environmental practice. We protect communities by regulating activities that can cause harmful pollution and by monitoring the quality of Scotland's air, land and water. The regulations we implement also cover the keeping and use, and the accumulation and disposal, of radioactive substances.

November is a month of contrasts.

Nature is slowing down for winter, but the season can bring some of Scotland's most challenging weather. With the potential for heavy rain, flooding, storms and cold snaps, now is a good time to make sure you're prepared.

As conditions become tougher for wildlife too, the RSPB advises that bird feeders with seeds and peanuts can once again be put out for the winter, helping garden birds as natural food sources become harder to find.

Radioactivity in food, water and the wider environment continues to remain well below public health limits, according to the latest Radioactivity in Food and the Environment (RIFE-31) report.

Our monitoring found that the highest radiation dose received by any member of the public in Scotland from permitted discharges was around 2.5% of the legal limit, demonstrating that doses from man-made radioactivity remain extremely low.

The latest household waste figures are in. What do they tell us?

They reveal a major shift in the way household waste is managed across Scotland. Since 2011, the amount of household waste sent to landfill has fallen by 84%, but there remains considerable scope to further reduce waste and increase recycling rates.

See some of the headline figures in the graphic below and read the full story here: beta.sepa.scot/news/2026/household-waste-sent-to-landfill-falls-by-84-since-2011-but-recycling-challenge-still-remains/

Further stormy weather is expected to affect Scotland through Tuesday and Wednesday.

Coastal flooding impacts are likely around the country, these may be particularly significant around the Northern Isles coastline. Storm surges combined with spring tides and large waves are expected to result in spray and wave overtopping, particularly around the high tide. These conditions may result in extensive flooding of low lying roads, property flooding and significant travel disruption.

Remain vigilant, particularly around coastal areas, and stay away from flooded promenades, sea walls and crashing waves.

Further stormy weather is expected to affect Scotland on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday with flooding impacts continuing for coastal communities. Today’s Scottish Flood Forecast highlights an Amber risk of flooding for the Western Isles, Caithness and Sutherland and the Northern Isles as a combination of high tides and large waves are expected to bring significant disruption

Across Monday, areas of the southwest and Argyll including the Solway Firth and Firth of Clyde will experience further disruption, particularly around high tide and into Monday evening. Large waves and strong winds will mean that the flooding of low-lying land and exposed roads, isolated properties and travel disruption, particularly from wave overtopping and spray, is likely.

Impacts from the wet and stormy weather will continue into Tuesday as higher winds increase the likelihood of significant flooding impacts. The areas expected to be impacted the most include the Western Isles, Northern Isles and the north-west coast. In these areas, communities can expect large waves and overtopping to result in extensive flooding of low lying roads, property flooding and significant travel disruption.

We continue to urge people to remain vigilant, particularly around coastal areas and stay away from flooded promenades and crashing waves.
