The Boo Charity Over 20 years of empowering young people through education & life skills 📚 Giving Opportunity, Not Charity.

Over 20 years of empowering young people in Kenya, through education and life skills. We believe that education, empowerment and employment is the key to breaking the poverty cycle. Working with 5 projects in Kenya, we’ve created a sustainable platform for change. Our Story:
Sarah Hicks (known as ‘Boo’ to friends and family) lost her life to cancer in October 2002 at the age of 36. Sarah was a gentle, determined and caring person, with a wonderful spirit. Sarah showed vast amounts of strength and drive throughout her later years as she searched for alternative treatment for her illness in Kenya. During that time she made many friends who were touched by the compassion and love she had for those less fortunate than herself. The impact Sarah had on countless people’s lives is hard to put into words. Sarah would be proud to know that twenty years after her passing she has left an extraordinary legacy in Kenya which has helped provide a future for over 600 young ladies through the development of valuable life skills. This has led to some amazing stories of incredible young people coming out of poverty to establish their own successful businesses and enterprises. By helping children and young adults in a sustainable way the ‘Boo’ charity has made Sarah’s wish come true. Our Projects:
We now work with 5 projects:
- Nyamache Life Skills Centre: Fully funded by Boo, this Life Skills Centre offers 5 training courses to young people in need.
- Nyamwanga ECD: Funding teachers’ and cooks’ wages, school uniforms and learning materials for over 170 pre-schoolers.
- Busire ECD: Supporting access to education for over 150 6-7 year olds in this extremely poor rural area.
- Kibera ECD: Providing primary education to over 150 of the poorest children in Kibera, Africa's largest slum.
- Kibera Football Program: Run by Kibera Mpira Mtanni (KIMMTA), holding regular football matches and tournaments.

From student to mentor: Linnet’s story.

Last term, former Dressmaking & Tailoring student Linnet returned to share her experiences and advice with current students.

Since graduating, Linnet has built a livelihood using several different skills. Alongside dressmaking, she grows maize, keeps chickens and earns an income from domestic work. As well as becoming a trainer herself, passing on her dressmaking skills to 3 students.

Her message to the students was simple: work hard, respect others, stay humble and don’t rely on just one source of income.

Most importantly, the skills they gain can give them the independence to earn a living and support themselves and their families.

Linnet’s visit is part of Nyamache’s ongoing alumni mentorship programme, where former students return to share their knowledge, experiences and practical advice with the next generation.

A lovely example of opportunity coming full circle 🙌

You can’t learn on an empty stomach.

This we’re shining a light on why food is such an important part of education.

Hunger affects concentration and the ability to learn, while school meals can help improve attendance, nutrition and learning.

Across the 3 ECDs we support, children recieve morning maize porridge and a hot lunch, often including ugali, beans or lentils and locally grown vegetables.

For many families, the promise of a meal is a powerful reason to send their children to school. And for the children, that food provides the energy to make the journey, learn, play and grow.

Food isn’t separate from education. It’s what helps make education possible.

Just £10 a month can provide a child with school lunches for a whole month.

Can you help us keep providing opportunity?

Empowerment starts with feeling heard, supported and valued.

This , we recognise the importance of creating spaces where young people feel safe to talk, build confidence and know they’re not alone.

At the KIMMTA learning hub, young people have access to mentorship, after-school activities and football to young people. Likewise, at Nyamache Life Skills Centre, students recieve guidance, mentorship and practical skills alongside their vocational training.

These opportunities help young people connect, share their experiences, build friendships and develop the confidence to navigate life’s challenges.

Because giving opportunity isn’t just about the skills they gain, it’s about supporting the whole person.

Behind every opportunity is a teacher who helps make it possible…

This , we are celebrating teachers and trainers across the projects we support.

From helping the ECD students take their first steps in reading and writing, to teaching practical vocational skills at Nyamache Life Skills Centre, their work goes beyond the classroom.

They build confidence, encourage ambition and give the students the skills they need to shape their own futures.

Thanks to your donations, we can help fund teachers’ wages and the resources they need to keep doing what they do best.

To every teacher and trainer in the Boo family, thank you for the opportunities you create every day! 🙏
