505-Sqn-Reserves The only RAF Reserve squadron in the South West, based in Newquay. Actively recruiting ages 18-54.

As a Reserve you’ll get to live your normal life and use your spare-time to develop transferable skills, increase your self-confidence, meet people from a wide range of backgrounds and enjoy adventurous training opportunities. Reserves commit a minimum of 27 paid days per year on a renewable twelve year basis. Each year includes a two week (15 days) block for general RAF training, and at least 12 weekend or holiday days for additional training, trade training, or training exercises. While you may get the opportunity to train overseas as part of your annual 15-day training block, most of your time will be spent on a nearby RAF base. Each one of these has its own role, from front-line operations to training establishments. Like Regular RAF personnel, Reserves can be mobilised on expeditionary operations at some time. They can be deployed to a UK, overseas or temporary base for up to six months, plus another six months for pre-deployment training and post-deployment relaxation with your loved ones. During your time away you could be travelling with your unit, filling in for another member of the RAF, or working alongside Regulars and Reserves from other services. You could also be part of a small team dedicated to a particular job, or a big disaster relief mission.

A proud week for 505 Sqn as we welcomed two new members into the RAF Reserves through attestation.

A warm welcome to AR Margaret, joining as a Chef, and AS1 Jamie, joining as a Driver.

Attestation marks the beginning of their journey with the RAF Reserves — a commitment to learning new skills, embracing new challenges and being part of something bigger.

Our Squadron badge, bearing the motto Magna Simul — Great Things Together — represents the spirit of teamwork and shared purpose that lies at the heart of 505 Sqn. Made even more special by bearing the signature of His Majesty The King, it is a reminder of the heritage and identity we are proud to be part of.

Another busy duty weekend for 505 Sqn, with plenty to celebrate!

It was great to welcome new members to the Squadron fresh from completing their Phase One training, as well as recognising those taking the next step in their RAF Reserves journey with promotions. Congratulations to all involved, and welcome to the team to our newest members!

A special mention goes to AS1 Eddie, who in just two years with us has truly thrown himself into Squadron life. From completing his training and getting stuck into exercises to embracing opportunities to develop his skills and support the team, Eddie is a great example of what can be achieved through commitment, enthusiasm and making the most of your time in the Reserves.

It’s fantastic to see our people progressing, developing and supporting one another. Whether you're just starting your journey or taking the next step, there's always an opportunity to learn, contribute and be part of something bigger.

A huge well done to AR Eileen who has completed her initial RAF Reserve training at RAF Halton.

Alongside her RAF Reserve commitments, Eileen balances life as a school teacher, showing exactly how being a Reservist can fit alongside a rewarding civilian career.

Now it’s time for the next challenge, as Eileen begins her Mechanical Transport (MT) Driver Training. 🚛

RAF MT Drivers play an important role in keeping people, equipment and supplies moving, with opportunities to support stations, exercises and potentially operations further afield. Scotland, Canada and Spain are just some of the places 505 Sqn Drivers have been deployed to in the past year alone.

From the classroom to the RAF, Eileen is building skills and experiences in two very different worlds — and this is just the beginning of her journey with 505 Squadron.

Well done, Eileen, and good luck with your driver training!

You too can start your journey.

Personnel from 505 Squadron, alongside colleagues from 611 Squadron - RAF Reserves and 614 County of Glamorgan Squadron - RAF Reserves recently deployed to the Isle of Wight for Exercise WYVERN CYMRU 26.

The exercise provided a varied programme of Force Protection training, AT and Force Development, challenging personnel both physically and mentally while developing military skills, teamwork and resilience.

The Force Development element explored the Island's rich military heritage and its contribution to the defence of the UK, while Adventurous Training provided an opportunity for some tough, highly technical Mountain Biking across the Island's steep chalk ridges and varied terrain.

A huge thank you to the team at South East RFCA Jersey Camp for providing such a fantastic facility and supporting the exercise.

A great week of training, development and building relationships across the three Squadrons.

This morning, members of 505 proudly represented the Squadron at the Battle of Britain Commemoration Service at St Eval Church.

It was a fitting opportunity to come together alongside RAF St Mawgan personnel, veterans, cadets, families and members of the local community to remember the courage and sacrifice of those who fought in the Battle of Britain.

It’s easy to see the spectacle, the music and the incredible performances — but there’s a huge amount of work happening behind the scenes to make it all happen.

Our very own AS1 Ian, one of our MT Drivers, is currently mobilised and playing his part at The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

From keeping people, equipment and everything else moving, MT drivers are often the unsung heroes who make sure the show can go on.

A fantastic opportunity for Ian, and another great example of how our Reservists bring their skills, commitment and professionalism to wherever they’re needed.

A great example of the skills and commitment our Reservists bring to the wider community.

CT Kev, a member of 505 Squadron, has been putting his professional experience to great use, supporting STEM activities at Bodmin Keep as part of his Civil Service role.

Working with young people and families, he has been helping deliver hands-on STEM activities and inspiring the next generation of engineers and aviators.

It’s fantastic to see the skills, experience and enthusiasm of our people making a difference both in uniform and in their civilian careers.
