Cooking with High Fen Wildland site manager, Frank 🍄

On our wildlands, many different species are growing and thriving due to our Nature recovery work.

We recently found some giant puffball mushrooms growing on site.

PSA: please only forage and consume fungi that you are absolutely sure is safe to eat. And, ensure you have land owner’s permission to forage.

Water means life. It's great seeing wildlife return to the Wildland as a result of bringing back the water.

Stay updated with the peatland restoration happening at High Fen Wildland as we encounter more species and see Nature continue to return and thrive.

High Fen Wildland has an abundance of Three-parted beggarticks 🌱

This wetland-loving plant provides a valuable late-season source of nectar and pollen, attracting a variety of insects including bees, butterflies and beneficial flies. Its seeds can also provide food for birds and other wildlife.

Seeing species like this flourishing is a great sign of the changes taking place at High Fen. As habitats recover and natural processes are restored, we’re creating more opportunities for plants, insects and other wildlife to return and thrive.

Mushroom spotting at High Fen 🍄‍🟫

Whilst out and about in the Wildland doing hydrological surveys, we've stumbled across many 'shaggy ink cap' mushrooms (also known as shaggy mane).

Great to see these pop up around the site as we go into Autumn!

Another amber-listed bird attracted by the water at High Fen Wildland - the Common Sandpiper.

A beautiful bicoloured smallish wader with a characteristic white tick on the breast. It is easily disturbed and hearing its call is normally the first sign one is nearby.

Watch closely and you’ll often catch it constantly bobbing its tail and rear end up and down - known as “teetering.” Chicks can do this within hours of hatching.

In flight, look for quick, stiff, shallow wingbeats interspersed with short glides on down-curved wings, giving a flickering, almost bat-like appearance that can help you ID it from a distance.

These did not breed on the Wildland, but because the site has held water throughout the dry summer, it has acted like a magnet to birds like the Sandpiper that feed on the wet exposed mud.

Want to come and see High Fen for yourself? We have tours throughout autumn and winter. 🔗 https://www.tickettailor.com/events/nattergal

Rain is one of the best things for wildlife 🌧️

Here at High Fen Wildland, our cows are moving through the wet grass, disturbing insects and invertebrates that are quickly snapped up by nearly 100 swallows.

These birds are busy feeding and building energy reserves before their long journey to Africa. Rain brings life to the landscape, supporting everything from the smallest invertebrates to migrating birds. Days like this are a wonderful reminder of how connected Nature really is.

🦉🌿🥾 Nattergal and Scouts

Nattergal and are collaborating over the next three years to help young people get closer to Nature and enjoy more time outdoors.

Together, we’re launching a refreshed Scouts Nature Badge – designed to help Cubs, Scouts and Explorers spot wildlife, notice seasonal changes and discover how to care for the world around them.

The new badge will be available from May. In the meantime, Scout groups can book hands on visits to our Wildlands including:

🌳 Harold’s Park, Essex – ancient woodland and meadow wildlife

🌾 Boothby, Lincolnshire – big open landscapes, river valleys and beavers

🌤️ High Fen, Norfolk – wetlands, rare species and huge skies

Expect guided walks, wildlife spotting and practical conservation activities.

And for Scouts families:
✨ 20% off Wildland tours, including our new beaver enclosure experience

We look forward to collaborating with to inspire the next generation of environmental leaders.
