Absolute legends! Huge tribute to CJ, Cindy, Stu, Tim, Josh, and everyone who worked late into last night down at Fish Quay Beach, hauling off nearly 30kg of plastic pellets despite the sewage outfall conditions. 👏🌊
I was out out last night, in no fit state to come and help, so I'm making amends this morning—armed with coffee, ibuprofen, and a cleanup kit! ☕💊
The tide is still bringing in moderate amounts of pellets around Long Sands, King Edward’s Bay, and Fish Quay. If you’re nearby and can pop down to lend a hand, please do! Just be careful not to tread the pellets into the sand.

King Eddies this morning (video via Sally - Yonder). It’s been a long time since we’ve seen this much material on this beach & came as a shock to see this today. There’s just so much we don’t know about what triggers waves of nurdles like this. If people can help clear today really appreciated

Got fed up with the pile of stuff at the fish quay, so me & my son built this (timber recycled from ‘24/‘25 election stakes 😉), also stops the bins blowing over.

Many thanks for anyone who came down & helped on any of the beaches yesterday. I was right and the paid teams didn’t really manage to get off Fish Quay so anything people were able to do really matters. Longsands much lighter than yesterday, as fish quay also not as bad more chance the paid teams will work their way right up northwards. If coming nurdling at Longsands suggest start at north end. This evening high tide not until after 5 so although some paid staff still on shift likely mostly only volunteers will be able to do much, we’ll just have to see what the tide brings us

Beach Update (Friday 28th Aug): worrying accumulation of plastic pellets has washed up along Longsands and many more on Fish Quay overnight.
⚠️ Please avoid stepping on affected sand to prevent pushing pellets deeper into the beach.
Cleanup teams are on-site working hard, but scale is bigger than seen for a while. Please take care not to make this any worse 🙏🏻

Onshore winds, surf and Spring Tide likely responsible for pellets back visible at Longsands & King Eddies tonight. Please pick them up if you’re passing, not a lot else to suggest as otherwise. For authentic Nurdle Spill volunteer experience Fish Quay Beach still sadly where it’s at with pellets still coming from the Tyne & a lot in the beach 😞.
Winds due to change tomorrow so any not collected & going out to sea overnight may not come back here.

It’s back to school next week so for those parents who get involved and take 🚗 🚙🚘🚐🛻 near to our Tynemouth schools it would be super useful if you could plan a way of doing that that doesn’t involve driving onto the footways.

It’s a big ask I know, and probably an infringement of civil liberties & fundamental human rights, but for this new school year can we give it a try?

Thanks,
Cllr Tom

Yet again Solis Marine (Briggs employer) gave failed to comment 👇🏻. Definitely smells like someone’s plan to quietly cut & run is coming under pressure here……

Have been watching some of the professional sampling of pellets embedded in beach below the surface & very tempted to write a community guide to doing this for your own local beach? Worth it?
Nothing much on Longsands this morning but still truly depressing quantities at the Fish Quay between high & low tide.

Please take a look & sign this petition, drafted by people on the Isle of Wight dealing with beach pollution. Legislation is needed or stuff just keeps happening.

The EU recently formalised its Plastic Pellet Loss Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2025/2365), which mandates risk management plans and independent audits for large handlers. We want the UK to follow suit with its own equivalent law.
